FLUCTUATING TEMP. GAGE AND FLASHING C.E.L.

Models 1988 SUNBIRD WITH U21 OR UBO GAGE Affected: CLUSTER WITH TRIP ODOMETER

If a condition of fluctuating temperature gage and flashing check engine light occurs, the cause may be an incorrectly routed stepper motor harness.

If the harness was routed through the temperature gage clip (see Figure 1), it could cause a short between harness and gage resulting in gage fluctuation and a flashing check engine light at vehicle speed sensor pulse speed.

To repair this condition move the harness behind the clip (see Figure 2), and install a new odometer assembly.

The part number for the odometer assembly is 25061404.

Use applicable labor operation and time.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
