CD PLAYER SKIPS ON ROUGH ROAD CON.-REPL. FRT. CONSOLE BRACK.

Subject: CD PLAYER SKIPS ON ROUGH ROAD CONDITIONS (REPLACE FRONT CONSOLE BRACKET)

Models Affected: 1990-92 SUNBIRD MODELS

CONDITION:

--------- Some owners of 1990-92 Sunbird cars with a CD player may comment on a condition where the CD player may "skip" on rough road conditions.

CAUSE:

----- The plastic front console bracket may allow enough movement to cause console instability.

CORRECTION:

---------- A revised metal front console bracket is available to add rigidity to console mounting.

1. Remove shift lever handle.

2. Remove console housing accessory trim plate.

3. Remove both console housing side trim panels.

4. Remove four lower console housing screws to console.

5. Remove console housing to Instrument Panel (I/P) brackets.

6. Disconnect electrical connections at CD player and remove housing assembly.

7. Remove lower housing mount bracket screws and bracket.

8. Remove shift indicator trim plate and electrical connector.

9. Remove power window switch connector (if equipped).

10. Remove console armrest/compartment liner and assembly.

11. Raise vehicle and suitably support.

12. Release parking brake tension at equalizer nut.

13. Lower vehicle.

14. Remove parking brake lever bolts and lever assembly.

15. Remove console assembly.

16. Remove shift cable and BTSI cable from bracket.

17. Remove front console bracket nuts and bracket.

18. Install revised bracket P/N 22586689.

19. Nuts to bracket. Tighten to 24 N.m (18 lbs. ft.)

20. Install shift and BTSI cables to bracket.

21. Install console assembly.

22. Install parking brake lever assembly, bolts and electrical connector.

23. Install console armrest/compartment and liner assembly.

24. Connect power window switch electrical connector if equipped.

25. Install shift indicator trim plate.

26. Install lower console housing bracket.

27. Install console housing assembly (four screws).

28. Install console to housing to I/P brackets and four nuts.

29. Install both console side trim panels.

30. Install console accessory trim plate.

31. Install shift lever handle and retainer.

32. Adjust parking brake lever as outlined in the appropriate Sunbird service manual.

33. Lower vehicle.
