Steering Gear Replacement Manual Transmission
Removal Procedure
- Raise the vehicle on a hoist. Refer to Lifting
and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Remove the tires and wheels. Refer to Tire
and Wheel Removal and Installation
in Tires and Wheels.
- Remove the power steering hoses from the power steering gear.
Refer to the following procedures:

• | Power Steering Return Hose Replacement (2.4L) |
- Remove the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles. Refer to Tie Rod End Replacement - Outer
.
- Remove the lower pinch bolt from the intermediate shaft. Refer
to the following procedures:

- Support the front suspension
crossmember (2) with a suitable jack stand.
- Remove the brake pipes from the retainers on the front suspension
support (2).
- Remove the front suspension crossmember mounting bolts. Refer
to Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement
in
Front Suspension.
- Lower the front suspension crossmember (2) in order to
remove the power steering gear (1).
- Remove the power steering gear mounting bolts (3).
- Remove the power steering gear (1) from the front suspension
crossmember (2).
Installation Procedure
- Install the power steering
gear (1) to the front suspension crossmember (2).
- Install the power steering gear mounting bolts (3).
Hand tighten the bolts.
- Raise the front suspension crossmember (2) into position
on the vehicle.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the front
suspension crossmember mounting bolts.
Tighten
- Tighten the left rear outboard bolt to 110 N·m (71 lb ft).
- Tighten the right rear outboard bolt to 110 N·m (71 lb ft).
- Tighten the rear inboard bolts to 110 N·m (71 lb ft).
- Tighten the power steering gear mounting bolts to 120 N·m
(89 lb ft).
- Install the lower pinch bolt to the intermediate shaft. Refer
to the following procedures:

- Install the brake pipes to the retainers on the front suspension
crossmember (2).
- Install the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles. Refer to Tie Rod End Replacement - Outer
.
- Install the power steering hoses to the power steering gear. Refer
to the following procedures:

• | Power Steering Return Hose Replacement (2.4L) |
- Install the tires and wheels. Refer to Tire
and Wheel Removal and Installation
in Tires and Wheels.
- Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Bleeding Power Steering System
.
- Align the front wheels. Refer to Measuring
Wheel Alignment (Front)
in Wheel Alignment.
Steering Gear Replacement Automatic Transmission
Removal Procedure
- Raise the vehicle on a hoist. Refer to Lifting
and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Remove the lower pinch bolt from the intermediate shaft. Refer
to the following procedures:

- Remove the front suspension crossmember. Refer to Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement
in Front Suspension.
- Remove the power steering
gear mounting bolts (3).
- Remove the power steering gear (1) from the front suspension
crossmember (2).
Installation Procedure
- Install the power steering
gear (1) to the front suspension crossmember (2).
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant

- Install the power
steering gear mounting bolts (3)
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 120 N·m (89 lb ft).
- Install the front suspension crossmember. Refer to Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement
in Front Suspension.
- Install the lower pinch bolt to the intermediate shaft. Refer
to the following procedures:

in Steering Wheel and Column - Standard. |
• | Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement
in Steering Wheel and Column - Tilt. |
- Lower the vehicle.
- Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Bleeding Power Steering System
.
- Align the front wheels. Refer to Measuring
Wheel Alignment (Front)
in Wheel Alignment.
