Steering Gear Replacement Manual Transmission

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the tires and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Remove the power steering hoses from the power steering gear. Refer to Power Steering Pressure Pipe/Hose Replacement and Power Steering Return Hose Replacement in Power Steering.
  4. Remove the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement in Power Steering.
  5. Remove the lower pinch bolt from the intermediate shaft. Refer to Upper Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.

  6. Object Number: 490396  Size: SH
  7. Support the front suspension crossmember (2) with a suitable jack stand.
  8. Remove the brake pipes from the retainers on the front suspension support (2).
  9. Remove the front suspension crossmember mounting bolts. Refer to Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement in Front Suspension.
  10. Lower the front suspension crossmember (2) in order to remove the power steering gear (1).
  11. Remove the power steering gear mounting bolts (3).
  12. Remove the power steering gear (1) from the front suspension crossmember (2).

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the power steering gear (1) to the front suspension crossmember (2).
  2. Install the power steering gear mounting bolts (3).
  3. Hand tighten the bolts.

  4. Raise the front suspension crossmember (2) into position on the vehicle.
  5. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6. Install the front suspension crossmember mounting bolts.
  7. Tighten

    1. Tighten the left rear outboard bolt to 110 N·m (71 lb ft).
    2. Tighten the right rear outboard bolt to 110 N·m (71 lb ft).
    3. Tighten the rear inboard bolts to 110 N·m (71 lb ft).
    4. Tighten the power steering gear mounting bolts to 120 N·m (89 lb ft).
  8. Install the lower pinch bolt to the intermediate shaft. Refer to Upper Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
  9. Install the brake pipes to the retainers on the front suspension crossmember (2).
  10. Install the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement .
  11. Install the power steering hoses to the power steering gear. Refer to Power Steering Pressure Pipe/Hose Replacement and Power Steering Return Hose Replacement .
  12. Install the tires and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  13. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
  14. Align the front wheels. Refer to Wheel Alignment Measurement in Wheel Alignment.

Steering Gear Replacement Automatic Transmission

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the lower pinch bolt from the intermediate shaft. Refer to Upper Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
  3. Remove the front suspension crossmember. Refer to Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement in Front Suspension.

  4. Object Number: 490396  Size: SH
  5. Remove the power steering gear mounting bolts (3).
  6. Remove the power steering gear (1) from the front suspension crossmember (2).

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the power steering gear (1) to the front suspension crossmember (2).
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application.   4. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 120 N·m (89 lb ft).

  5. Install the front suspension crossmember. Refer to Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement in Front Suspension.
  6. Install the lower pinch bolt to the intermediate shaft. Refer to Upper Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
  9. Align the front wheels. Refer to in Wheel Alignment Measurement in Wheel Alignment.
