J 37043 Parking Brake Cable Release Tool

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the console. Refer to Front Floor Console Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.

  2. Object Number: 741890  Size: SH
  3. Release the park brake at the lever (6).
  4. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.

  5. Object Number: 169061  Size: SH
  6. Have an assistant hold the cable towards the rear of the car in order to create slack in the cable (4).

  7. Object Number: 169065  Size: SH
  8. Have an assistant pull the cable until the notch on the ratchet (1) is visible through the cover plate opening (4).
  9. Push the pawl spring (5) downward toward the notch in the ratchet (1).
  10. Have an assistant release the cable slowly in order to allow the notch (1) to catch the leg of the spring (5).
  11. Remove the front parking brake cable button (2) from the reel assembly.

  13. Use the J 37043 in order to remove the cable conduit end fitting (4) from the handle assembly (2).

  14. Object Number: 169061  Size: SH
  15. Disconnect the cable (3) from the equalizer.

  16. Object Number: 169064  Size: SH
  17. Fold over the retaining clip.
  18. Lower the vehicle.
  19. Remove the left side carpet retainer. Refer to Carpet Retainer Replacement in Interior Trim.
  20. Remove the grommet and retainer from the floor pan.
  21. Remove the front cable.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 169064  Size: SH
  1. Install the cable through the floor pan, from the interior of the car to the exterior of the car.
  2. Install the cable into the clip.

  3. Object Number: 169065  Size: SH
  4. Ensure that the pawl spring (5) is engaged with the notch on the ratchet (1).
  5. Install the cable conduit fitting (3) to the lever assembly.
  6. Install the front parking brake cable button (2) to the reel assembly.
  7. Install the left carpet retainer. Refer to Carpet Retainer Replacement in Interior Trim.
  8. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.

  9. Object Number: 169061  Size: SH
  10. Install the cable (3) to the equalizer assembly.
  11. Install the cable to the connector (1).
  12. Reposition the tang (2) in order to retain the cable.
  13. Pull on the front parking brake cable at the rear of the vehicle in order to release the pawl spring from the notch on the ratchet.
  14. Lower the vehicle.

    Notice: Parking brake adjustment is not necessary. This is a self adjusting system and damage may result from attempting to adjust or modify this system in any way. It may be necessary to adjust the rear brakes to obtain the proper tension in the system.

  16. Fully apply and release the hand brake (6) 4-6 times in order to activate the self adjust system.
  17. Install the console. Refer to Front Floor Console Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.
