J 37043 Parking Brake Cable Release Tool

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the console. Refer to Front Floor Console Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console. If you are repairing a Pontiac, remove the shift boot. Refer to Front Floor Console Replacement in Interior Trim.

  2. Object Number: 741890  Size: SH
  3. Move the park brake lever (6) to the OFF position.
  4. Disconnect the electrical connector (1).

  6. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  7. Have an assistant pull and hold the cable towards the rear of the car in order to create slack in the cable (4).

  8. Object Number: 169065  Size: SH
  9. Have the assistant pull the cable until the notch on the ratchet (1) is visible through the cover plate opening (4).
  10. Push the pawl spring (5) downward toward the notch in the ratchet (1).
  11. Have the assistant release the cable slowly in order to allow the notch (1) to catch the leg of the spring (5).

  13. Remove the front parking brake cable button (3) from the reel assembly.
  14. Use the J 37043 in order to remove the cable conduit end fitting (4) from the handle assembly (2).

  15. Object Number: 104495  Size: SH
  16. Remove the shift assembly mounting nuts. Move the shift assembly out of the way just enough to allow the park brake assembly to be removed.

  17. Object Number: 741890  Size: SH
  18. Remove the nuts (5) securing the lever (2).
  19. Remove the lever (2).

Installation Procedure

  1. Ensure that the pawl spring (5) is engaged with the notch on the ratchet (1).

  2. Object Number: 741890  Size: SH
  3. Install the front parking brake cable to the lever assembly (2) and secure the cable conduit fitting (4) into the lever assembly (2).
  4. Install the front parking brake cable button (3) to the ratchet.
  5. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6. Install the parking brake lever assembly (2) and the shift assembly. Install the attaching nuts.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  8. Connect the electrical connector (1).

  10. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  11. Pull on the front parking brake cable at the rear of the vehicle in order to release the pawl spring from the notch on the ratchet (4).
  12. Remove the safety stands. Lower the vehicle.

    Notice: Parking brake adjustment is not necessary. This is a self adjusting system and damage may result from attempting to adjust or modify this system in any way. It may be necessary to adjust the rear brakes to obtain the proper tension in the system.

  14. Fully apply and release the hand brake 4-6 times in order to activate the self adjust system.
  15. Install the console. Refer to Front Floor Console Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.
