Removal Procedure

Caution: Keep fingers away from rear brake shoe springs to prevent fingers from being pinched between spring and shoe web or spring and backing plate.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Remove the brake drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement .

  4. Object Number: 171479  Size: SH

    Notice: Do not over stretch the adjuster spring. Damage can occur if the spring is over stretched.

  5. Remove the adjuster spring (4) from the adjuster actuator lever.
  6. Remove the straight end of the adjuster actuator spring from the brake shoe.
  7. Remove the adjuster actuator lever.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 171479  Size: SH

    Notice: Do not over stretch the adjuster spring. Damage can occur if the spring is over stretched.

  1. Install the adjuster actuator lever.
  2. Install the straight end of the adjuster spring (4) to the brake shoe.
  3. Install the hook end of the adjuster spring to the adjuster actuator lever.
  4. Inspect the adjuster for proper engagement with the drum brake system components.
  5. Adjust the rear drum brakes. Refer to Drum Brake Adjustment .
  6. Install the brake drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement .
  7. Adjust the park brake system. Refer to Park Brake Adjustment in Park Brake.
  8. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  9. Lower the vehicle.
