Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Clean any dirt or foreign material around the wheel cylinder assembly inlet and pilot.

  4. Object Number: 492721  Size: SH
  5. Remove the brake pipe (2) from the wheel cylinder (1).
  6. Important: Install a rubber cap or plug to the exposed brake pipe fitting end in order to prevent brake fluid loss and contamination.

  7. Plug the open brake pipe end.
  8. Remove the brake drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement .
  9. Remove the brake shoes. Refer to Brake Shoe Replacement .
  10. Remove the wheel cylinder bolts.
  11. Remove the wheel cylinder.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the wheel cylinder.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the wheel cylinder bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the wheel cylinder bolts to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  5. Install the brake pipe (2) to the wheel cylinder (1).
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the brake pipe nut to 23 N·m (17 lb ft).

  7. Install the brake shoes. Refer to Brake Shoe Replacement .
  8. Adjust the rear drum brakes. Refer to Drum Brake Adjustment .
  9. Install the brake drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement .
  10. Bleed the wheel cylinder and then the complete brake system. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding in Hydraulic Brakes.
  11. Adjust the park brake system. Refer to Park Brake Adjustment in Park Brake.
  12. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  13. Lower the vehicle.
