Steering Gear Replacement Manual Transmission

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the tires and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Disconnect the power steering hoses from the power steering gear.
  4. Disconnect the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement in Power Steering.
  5. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.

  6. Object Number: 490396  Size: SH
  7. Using a suitable jack stand, support the front suspension crossmember (2).
  8. Disconnect the brake pipes from the retainers on the front suspension support (2).
  9. Remove the front suspension crossmember mounting bolts.
  10. Lower the front suspension crossmember (2) in order to remove the power steering gear (1).
  11. Remove the power steering gear mounting bolts (3).
  12. Remove the power steering gear (1) from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 490396  Size: SH
  1. Place the power steering gear (1) on the front suspension crossmember (2).
  2. Install the power steering gear mounting bolts (3). Hand tighten the bolts.
  3. Raise the front suspension crossmember (2) into position on the vehicle.
  4. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  5. Install the front suspension crossmember mounting bolts.
  6. Tighten

    1. Tighten the left rear outboard bolt to 110 N·m (71 lb ft).
    2. Tighten the right rear outboard bolt to 110 N·m (71 lb ft).
    3. Tighten the rear inboard bolts to 110 N·m (71 lb ft).
  7. Tighten the power steering gear to crossmember bolts.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 120 N·m (89 lb ft).

  9. Connect the intermediate shaft to the steering gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
  10. Connect the brake pipes to the retainers on the front suspension crossmember (2).
  11. Connect the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement .
  12. Connect the power steering hoses to the power steering gear.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the fittings to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  14. Install the tires and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
  17. Align the front wheels. Refer to Wheel Alignment Measurement in Wheel Alignment.

Steering Gear Replacement Automatic Transmission

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the tires and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Disconnect the power steering hoses from the power steering gear.
  4. Disconnect the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement in Power Steering.
  5. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.

  7. Using a suitable jack stand, support the front suspension crossmember (2).
  8. Remove the front suspension crossmember mounting bolts.
  9. Lower the front suspension crossmember (2) in order to remove the power steering gear (1).
  10. Remove the power steering gear mounting bolts (3).
  11. Remove the power steering gear (1) from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the power steering gear (1) to the front suspension crossmember (2).
  2. Install the power steering gear mounting bolts (3). Hand tighten only.
  3. Raise the front suspension crossmember (2) into position on the vehicle.
  4. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  5. Install the front suspension crossmember mounting bolts.
  6. Tighten

    1. Tighten the left rear outboard bolt to 110 N·m (71 lb ft).
    2. Tighten the right rear outboard bolt to 110 N·m (71 lb ft).
    3. Tighten the rear inboard bolts to 110 N·m (71 lb ft).
  7. Tighten the power steering gear to crossmember bolts.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 120 N·m (89 lb ft).

  9. Connect the intermediate shaft to the steering gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
  10. Connect the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement .
  11. Connect the power steering hoses to the power steering gear.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the fittings to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  13. Install the tires and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  14. Lower the vehicle.
  15. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
  16. Align the front wheels. Refer to Wheel Alignment Measurement in Wheel Alignment.
