J 44298 Driver Air Bag Removal Tool

Removal Procedure

    Caution: Refer to SIR Inflator Module Handling and Storage Caution in the Preface section.

  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling .
  2. On vehicles with tilt steering columns, remove the upper trim cover. Refer to Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement .
  3. On vehicles with non-tilt steering columns, remove the lower trim cover. Refer to Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement

  4. Object Number: 640349  Size: SH
  5. Turn the steering wheel until two of the four openings on the back of the steering wheel are accessible.
  6. Adjust and install J 44298 into the 2 openings.
  7. Important: Fully seat the air bag removal tool.

  8. Pull the handle toward the steering wheel. Release the 2 spring-loaded fasteners.
  9. Turn the steering wheel. Repeat the same steps for the remaining two openings.

  11. Gently pull the inflator module (1) from the steering wheel.
  12. Remove the connector position assurance (CPA)  from the yellow SIR electrical connector.
  13. Disconnect the yellow SIR electrical connector from the back of the steering wheel inflator module.
  14. Rotate the horn contact lead counterclockwise ¼ turn. Remove the horn contact lead from the steering column cam tower.

Installation Procedure

  1. Connect the horn contact lead to the steering wheel cam tower.
  2. Rotate the horn contact lead ¼ turn clockwise in order to secure the horn contact lead.
  3. Connect the yellow SIR electrical connector to the back of the steering wheel inflator module (1).
  4. Install the CPA to the yellow SIR electrical connector.
  5. Install the inflator module (1) to the steering wheel by pushing on both sides of the inflator module until the retaining springs engage.
  6. Install the steering column trim cover. Refer to Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement .
  7. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling .
  8. Fully deploy the module before disposal. If the module was replaced under warranty, fully deploy and dispose of the module after the required retention period. Refer to Inflator Module Handling and Scrapping .
