CAMPAIGN:INCORRECT DISTRIBUTOR MODULE - INSTALL NEW MODULE

MODELS: 1986 Chevrolet Chevette Models equipped with 1.6L L4 Engine

ALL AFFECTED DEALERS:

DEFECT INVOLVED:

General Motors has determined some 1986 Chevrolet Chevette models equipped with 1.6L L4 Engine may be emitting pollutants in excess of Federal Emission Standards.

These vehicles may have been built with an incorrect distributor module. This could result in a difficult or no-start condition and improperly set engine timing. If not corrected, this condition can also prevent proper operation of the emission control system.

To correct vehicles with the wrong distributor module a new module will be installed and the engine timing checked and, if required, reset.

VEHICLES INVOLVED:

Involved are some 1986 Chevrolet chevette models with 1.6L L4 Engine within the following parameters:

All affected vehicles have been identified by the VIN listing provided to involved Dealers with this bulletin. Any Dealer not receiving a listing was not shipped any of the affected vehicles.

DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY:

Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this campaign at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.

Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your new or used vehicle inventory, or it is in your Dealership for service in the future, you should take the steps necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made before reselling or releasing the vehicle.

Owners of vehicles recently sold from your new vehicle inventory are to be contacted by the Dealer, and arrangements made to make the required modification according to instructions contained in this bulletin.

CAMPAIGN PROCEDURE:

Refer to Section 4 of the Service Policies and Procedures Manual for the detailed procedure on handling Product Campaigns. Dealers are requested to complete the campaign on all transfers as soon as possible.

OWNER NOTIFICATION:

All owners of record at the time of campaign release are shown on the attached c[Aomputer listing and have been notified by first class mail from General Motors. The listings provided are for campaign activity only and should not be used for any other purpose.

PARTS INFORMATION:

Parts are to be obtained through regular parts channels.

PARTS AND LABOUR CLAIM INFORMATION:

Credit for the campaign work performed will be paid upon receipt of a properly completed campaign claim card or RAPID terminal transmission in accordance with the following:

This allowance includes 0.1 hour for Dealer Administrative detail associated with this campaign. Parts credit will be based on Dealer net plus 30% to cover parts handling. If additional time is required please have District Service Manager apply for additional credit.

SERVICE PROCEDURE:

1. Open hood.

2. Check the distributor for the manufacturer's date code located just below the distributor cap on rim of base (See Illustration). If date code is 5L27 proceed to step 3. All others, no repair required, proceed to Step 7.

3. Remove distributor cap. Remove rotor, if necessary, to inspect module. FAIRCHILD modules are identified by brass coloured ferrules on a attaching screw holes. DELCO modules are identified by steel coloured ferrules on attaching screw holes and white dot in centre of the module.

4. DELCO modules need not be replaced; reassemble distributor and proceed to Step 7.

5. Replace FAIRCHILD module, with service P/N 1875990, following instructions in the 1986 Chevrolet Chevette Service Manual (ST-389-86) Page 6D-24.

6. Check ignition timing; set to specifications if required.

7. Install Campaign completion label and close hood.

INSTALLATION OF CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL

Clean surface of radiator upper mounting panel and apply a Campaign Identification Label. Make sure the correct campaign number is inserted on the label. This will indicate that the campaign has been completed.
