Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle?

Turn the ignition switch to the START position.

Is the security indicator ON?

Go to Security Indicator Malfunction

Turn the ignition switch to the START position.

Does the starter solenoid click?

Go to Starter Solenoid Clicks, Engine Does Not Crank

  1. With a scan tool, observe the Crank Request Signal parameter in the engine control module (ECM) data list.
  2. Turn the ignition to the START position.

Does the scan tool display that the Crank Request Signal parameter is Yes?

Go to Step 5

Go to Power Mode Mismatch

  1. With a scan tool, observe the Starter Relay Command parameter in the ECM data list.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the START position.

Does the scan tool display that the Starter Relay Command parameter is ON?

Go to Step 7

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Verify that the transmission is in Park or Neutral.
  3. With a scan tool, observe the PNP parameter in the ECM data list.

Does the scan tool display Park or Neutral?

Go to Step 7

  1. Disconnect the starter relay.
  2. Turn the ignition ON.
  3. Connect a test light between the starter relay coil supply voltage circuit and a good ground.

Does the test light illuminate?

Go to Step 8

  1. Connect a test light between a battery positive voltage circuit and the starter relay coil control circuit of the starter relay.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the START position.

Does the test light illuminate?

Go to Step 9

  1. Disconnect the starter relay.
  2. Turn the ignition ON.
  3. Connect a test light between the starter relay switch supply voltage circuit and good ground.

Does the test light illuminate?

Connect a 30-amp fused jumper between the battery positive voltage circuit and the starter solenoid crank voltage circuit of the starter relay.

Does the engine crank?

Go to Step 17

Does the fuse in the jumper open?

Test the STARTER relay coil control circuit of the ECM for an open or high resistance. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs .

Repair the battery positive voltage circuit of the relay coil. Refer to Wiring Repairs .

Did you complete the repair?

Go to Step 23

Repair the starter relay switch supply voltage circuit. Refer to Wiring Repairs .

Test the starter solenoid crank voltage circuit of the starter relay for an open or high resistance. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs .

Test the starter solenoid crank voltage circuit of the starter relay for a short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs .
