SUBJECT: SQUEAK AND RATTLE DIAGNOSTIC GUIDE

MODELS: 1994-95 CHEVROLET LUMINA MINIVAN 1994-95 OLDSMOBILE SILHOUETTE 1994-95 PONTIAC TRANS SPORT

THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IS BEING DISTRIBUTED AS AN AID TO ASSIST IN DIAGNOSING VEHICLE SQUEAK AND RATTLE CONDITIONS.

CONDITION: CORRECTION:

INSTRUMENT PANEL/DASH ASSEMBLY ------------------------------

LOOSE/RATTLING TYPE NOISE INSPECT FOR AND REMOVE OR SECURE:

A. LOOSE/FREE ROLLING FASTENERS OR FOREIGN MATERIAL.

B. UNCLIPPED/UNFASTENED WIRES.

C. LOOSE INSTALLED/ UNFASTENED KEYLESS ENTRY AND "DERM" MODULES.

TAPPING/ITCHING FROM INSPECT FOR PRESENCE AND FRONT OF I/P AREA CORRECT INSTALLATION OF SEALING STRIPS AT LEAD- ING EDGE OF UPPER DASH TRIM PANEL (FIGURE 1).

FRONT DOORS

FRONT DOOR GLASS CLUNK REMOVE INTERIOR DOOR TRIM PANEL:

A. INSPECT AND TIGHTEN ANY LOOSE HARDWARE.

B. REALIGN FRONT GUIDE RETAINER IF REQUIRED BY:

1. LOOSEN UPPER ATTACHING SCREW FOR FRONT GUIDE RETAINER.

2. MOVE WINDOW ASSEMBLY TO FULL UP POSITION AND THEN DOWN UNTIL WINDOW IS SLIGHTLY OPEN.

3. MAKING SURE THAT GUIDES ARE ENGAGED INTO CHANNELS AND NOT BOUND, TIGHTEN SCREW TO SPECIFIED TORQUE OF 6 N.M (4 LB.FT.).

FRONT DOOR HEADER TO ROOF INCREASE COMPRESSION CREAK BETWEEN DOOR AND BODY OPENING BY:

A. MOVING STRIKER SLIGHTLY INBOARD.

B. LOOSEN DOOR SIDE HINGES AND MOVE DOOR INBOARD TO PROVIDE ADDED COMPRESSION.

FRONT DOOR GLASS SCRAPES RELOCATE FRONT LOWER GUIDE OR CHATTERS WHILE OPERATING ATTACHMENT. REFER TO CORPORATE BULLETIN 431038.

LOOSE RATTLE TYPE NOISE REMOVE DOOR TRIM PANEL, INSPECT AND REMOVE FOREIGN MATERIAL SUCH AS MANDRILS, SCREWS, ETC.

SLIDING DOOR

CHUCKING/CLUNKING BETWEEN SHIM PIN POCKETS REAR- DOOR PIN AND POCKETS WARD BY INSERTING SHIMS (WASHERS, APPROXIMATELY 1MM THICK) BEHIND POCKETS AT SCREW HOLES AND LUBRICATE POCKETS WITH A SILICONE PASTE (FIGURE 3).

LOWER ROLLER BRACKET/ A. INSPECT TRACK FOR TRACK RATTLE SURFACE IRREGULARITIES SUCH AS BURRS OR WELD FLASH AND REMOVE.

B. INSTALL NEW LOWER BRACKET WITH "HYTREL" ROLLER.

CENTER ROLLER BRACKET ALIGN CENTER ROLLER TO SCRAPES/DRAGS ON TRACK MINIMIZE DRAG BY:

A. ADJUSTMENT OF CENTER ROLLER BRACKET AT ATTACHMENT TO DOOR (FIGURE 4, VIEW A).

B. ADDITIONAL HEIGHT POSITIONING CAN BE ACHIEVED BY ADJUSTMENT OF LOWER ROLLER BRACKET. (FIGURE 4, VIEW B).

POWER SLIDING DOOR (E58) APPLY DIELECTRIC ELECTRICAL CONTACTS LUBRICANT TO CONTACTS RATTLE AND/OR SWITCH PLUNGERS.

SLIDING DOOR GLASS LATCH A. TIGHTEN FASTENERS CREAKS/RATTLES SECURING LATCH TO GLASS.

B. IF NOISE PERSISTS, REPLACE LATCH ASSEMBLY WITH P/N 10213888.

LIFT GATE

CHUCKING BETWEEN STRIKER A. ADJUST LOWER RUBBER AND LATCH AT RIGHT OR BUMPERS OUTWARD IN HALF- LEFT SIDE OF LIFTGATE TURN INCREMENTS.

B. IF CHUCKING PERSISTS, ADJUST STRIKER POSITION FORWARD.

RATTLING NOISE WITHIN REMOVE REQUIRED TRIM TO LIFTGATE ACCESS INNER LIFTGATE AREA:

A. INSPECT AND REMOVE ANY FOREIGN MATERIAL SUCH AS RIVET MANDRILS, SCREWS, ETC.

B. CHECK LOCK RODS FOR PROPER ADJUSTMENT AND CORRECT AS REQUIRED.

UNDERBODY/CHASSIS -----------------

CLUCKING FROM FRONT OF CHECK TORQUE OF STRUT VEHICLE, ENGINE STRUT ATTACHING FASTENERS. RELATED IF NUT TORQUE IS UNDER 48 N.M (35 LB.FT.) REPLACE FASTENERS (FIGURE 5).

BOLT - P/N 11502813 NUT - P/N 11509678

CLUCKING FROM REAR OF INSPECT AND TORQUE LOOSE VEHICLE FASTENERS AT:

A. CONTROL ARM TO UNDER- BODY CONNECTION 270 N.M (199 LB.FT.).

B. TRACKBAR TO UNDERBODY 65 N.M (48 LB.FT.) AND AXLE 85 N.M (63 LB.FT.) CONNECTIONS.

INSPECT REAR SPRINGS TO INSURE PROPER ORIENTATION (FIGURE 6).

LOOSE LUMBER NOISE INSPECT AND TORQUE LOOSE FROM REAR OF VEHICLE SHOCK ABSORBER TO BODY ATTACHMENTS 26 N.M (19 LB.FT.).

FRAME INSULATOR NOISE INSPECT AND CORRECT ANY (FRAME POP) INSULATORS NOT PROPERLY SEATED. REFER TO CORPORATE BULLETIN 431059.

GLASS

WINDSHIELD "CREAK OR REMOVE INTERIOR TRIM IN ITCH" AT UPPER RIGHT ORDER TO ACCESS AFFECTED HAND CORNER AREA AND:

A. USING A STEEL FLAT SPOON INSERTED BETWEEN GLASS AND WELD FLANGE, FLATTEN SMOOTH ANY WELDING WIRE REMANENTS OR WELD FLASH UNTIL CONTACT WITH GLASS IS ELIMINATED.

B. RESEAL REPAIRED AREA.

SEATS

FRONT SEAT CREAKS/ A. APPLY GM LUBRIPLATE, SQUEAKS P/N 1050109 OR EQUIVALENT, BETWEEN SEAT SPRINGS AND SEAT FRAME AT POINTS OF CONTACT ON BOTH RIGHT AND LEFT SIDE OF SEATS (SEE FIGURE 8).

B. REMOVE SEAT SLAVE HINGE COVER AND APPLY GM LUBRIPLATE INDICATED ABOVE TO SLAVE HINGE PIVOT (SEE FIGURE 9).

C. TIGHTEN SEAT TO RISER/ ADJUSTER ASSEMBLY FASTENERS 43 N.M (31 LB.FT.).

D. TIGHTEN RISER/ADJUSTER ASSEMBLY TO FLOOR PAN FASTENERS 43 N.M (32 LB.FT.).

SECOND AND THIRD ROW APPLY GM LUBRIPLATE, P/N 1050109 SEATS SQUEAK OR EQUIVALENT, TO BOTH ENDS OF LATCH PLATE ON BOTH SIDES OF SEATS. (SEE FIGURE 10).

SECOND AND THIRD ROW NO FIX AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME. SEATS RATTLE WHEN IN FORWARD STOWED POSITION

STEERING COLUMN

SQUEAK APPARENT WHEN FOLLOWING SERVICE MANUAL STEERING WHEEL IS TURNED PROCEDURE, REMOVE AND TO A FULL LOCK POSITION REPLACE SIR COIL. (-UK3) P/N 26041005 (+UK3) P/N 26031793

SHIFT LEVER SQUEAKS INSPECT AND INSURE INSTRUMENT PANEL VINYL TRIM EDGE IN AREA OF STEERING COLUMN IS PROPERLY ROLLED FORWARD TO CONTACT TEFLON TAPE ON SHIFT COLLAR OF COLUMN (FIGURE 7).

MISCELLANEOUS

ROOF RATTLE ACCESS STEEL ROOF BOWS AND CAREFULLY INSPECT FOR FOREIGN MATERIAL OR EXTRA FASTENERS.

RATTLE WITHIN OVERHEAD INSPECT FOR ROLLING A/C DUCT TRIM PANEL FOREIGN MATERIAL OR EXTRA FASTENERS.
