WINDSHIELD WIPER BLADE CHATTER (REP. WIPER ARM

SUBJECT: WINDSHIELD WIPER BLADE CHATTER (REPLACE WIPER ARM)

MODELS: 1997-98 CHEVROLET VENTURE - BUILT PRIOR TO VIN BREAKPOINT WD212785 1997-98 OLDSMOBILE SILHOUETTE - BUILT PRIOR TO VIN BREAKPOINT WD212698 1997-98 PONTIAC TRANSPORT - BUILT PRIOR TO VIN BREAKPOINT WD212852

CONDITION:

SOME OWNERS MAY COMMENT THAT THE WIPER BLADE(S) CHATTER ON THE WINDSHIELD.

CORRECTION:

INSTALL NEW WIPER ARM(S) USING THE FOLLOWING SERVICE PROCEDURE:

1. TURN IGNITION SWITCH TO "ON" POSITION.

2. SET WIPER SWITCH TO "PULSE" POSITION.

3. TURN THE IGNITION SWITCH "OFF" WHEN WIPER ARMS ARE IN THE INNERWIPE (PAUSE) POSITION AND NOT MOVING.

4. DISCONNECT WASHER HOSE FROM WIPER ARM. SEE FIGURE 1.

5. REMOVE COVER FROM WIPER ARM NUT.

6. REMOVE NUT FROM WIPER ARM ASSEMBLY AND WIPER LINKAGE ASSEMBLY DRIVE SHAFT.

7. REMOVE WIPER ARM ASSEMBLY FROM WIPER LINKAGE ASSEMBLY DRIVE SHAFT USING A SUITABLE BATTERY CABLE TERMINAL TYPE PULLER.

8. REMOVE WIPER BLADE ASSEMBLY FROM WIPER ARM ASSEMBLY. SEE FIGURE 2.

A. UNSNAP CLIP AND ROTATE UP. B. PUSH IN BUTTON OF WIPER BLADE ASSEMBLY CLIP AND REMOVE WIPER BLADE ASSEMBLY FROM INSIDE RADIUS OF WIPER ASSEMBLY. C. BRING WIPER ARM ASSEMBLY OUT THROUGH OPENING IN WIPER BLADE ASSEMBLY.

9. CLEAN THE WIPER BLADE ASSEMBLY WITH WINDSHIELD WASHER SOLVENT.

10. CLEAN THE WINDSHIELD WITH GLASS CLEANER.

IMPORTANT:

LEFT AND RIGHT WIPER BLADE ASSEMBLIES ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE. WIPER BLADE ASSEMBLIES CAN BE IDENTIFIED BY AN "L" (LEFT) OR "R" (RIGHT) ON THE BACK OF THE WIPER BLADE ASSEMBLY FRAME.

11. INSTALL WIPER BLADE ASSEMBLY ON NEW WIPER ARM ASSEMBLY.

A. INSTALL WIPER BLADE ASSEMBLY IN THE INSIDE RADIUS OF WIPER ARM ASSEMBLY. B. PUSH CLIP DOWN UNTIL IT SNAPS INTO PLACE.

IMPORTANT:

DURING THE REMOVAL OF THE WIPER ARM RETAINING NUT, THE WIPER ARM MAY HAVE MOVED ON THE WINDSHIELD. THEREFORE, IT IS NECESSARY TO CONFIRM THAT THE WIPER LINKAGE ASSEMBLY DRIVE SHAFT IS STILL IN THE INNERWIPE (PAUSE) POSITION.

12. TURN THE IGNITION SWITCH TO THE "ON" POSITION.

13. SET WIPER SWITCH TO "PULSE" POSITION.

14. TURN THE IGNITION SWITCH "OFF" WHEN WIPER LINKAGE ASSEMBLY DRIVE SHAFT IS IN THE INNERWIPE (PAUSE) POSITION AND NOT MOVING.

15. INSTALL WIPER ARM ASSEMBLY ON WIPER LINKAGE ASSEMBLY DRIVE SHAFT USING THE DIMENSIONS GIVEN BELOW.

RIGHT ARM (PASSENGER) - 123 MM (4.80 IN) FROM THE TOP OF THE WIPER BLADE ASSEMBLY UP TO THE UPPER SOLID EDGE OF THE WINDSHIELD BLACKOUT AREA. SEE FIGURE 1. MEASUREMENT MUST BE TAKEN AT THE OUTSIDE END/TIP OF THE WIPER BLADE ASSEMBLY.

LEFT ARM (DRIVER) - 147 MM (5.76 IN) FROM THE BOTTOM OF WIPER BLADE ASSEMBLY DOWN TO THE UPPER SOLID EDGE OF THE WINDSHIELD BLACKOUT AREA. SEE FIGURE 1. DO NOT MEASURE TO THE EDGE OF THE SHADED AREA. MEASUREMENT MUST BE TAKEN AT THE OUTSIDE END/TIP OF THE WIPER BLADE ASSEMBLY.

16. INSTALL NUT ON WIPER LINKAGE ASSEMBLY DRIVE SHAFT AND TIGHTEN TO 48 N.M (35 LB FT).

17. INSTALL COVER ON WIPER ARM NUT.

18. LUBRICATE WASHER HOSE WITH WINDSHIELD WASHER SOLVENT AND RECONNECT WASHER HOSE.

19. OPERATE WIPERS AND CHECK FOR PROPER OPERATION.
