Subject:Maximum RPM of 4,800 and No Upshift on Hard Accel - Replace CKP Sensor

Models:2003-2006 Pontiac Vibe
with 1.8L Engine (VIN 8 - RPO LV6)

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

On rare occasions, the engine may not rev over 4,800 RPM and the transmission will not upshift on hard acceleration. The engine may feel like it is prematurely hitting fuel cut off or like the vehicle has a restricted fuel filter, exhaust, or air intake system. Typically, there will not be any DTCs stored and the concern will happen while driving or while free revving the engine in neutral/park. Additionally, normal engine and transmission operation will be noted when operating the engine below 4,800 RPM.

Recommendation/Instructions:

If the SI diagnostics do not isolate a cause for this concern, replace the crank sensor. When replacing the crank sensor, make sure to properly route the crank sensor harness below the water outlet on the front cover, rather than above it.

Note: Monitoring the crank sensor signal with an oscilloscope may not isolate the crank sensor as the cause of this concern.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
