Removal Procedure
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Place a reference mark on the pinion flange yoke and the differential
pinion flange.
- Remove the 4 bolts and the 4 nuts and washers.
- Remove the mid shaft bearing support bolts (1,2).
- Remove the sliding yoke (2) and the two piece propeller shaft assembly
from the transmission.
- Inspect the shaft for dents or other damage. Replace the shaft if the
shaft is damaged.
- Inspect the universal joints for smooth pivoting. If the universal joints
bind or appear tight replace the universal joints as assembled.
- Inspect the sliding yoke splines (1) for
excessive wear or damage. If the splines (1) appear worn or rounded, replace
the sliding yoke (3).
- Inspect the sliding yoke for the following:
• | If the sliding yoke surface appears scored or rough, replace the sliding yoke. |
- Inspect the pinion flange yoke for the following:
• | If the pinion flange yoke appears damaged or distorted, replace the pinion flange
yoke. |
Installation Procedure
- Install the sliding yoke (1) into
the transmission with the two piece propeller shaft assembly.
- Ensure that the sliding yoke splines are lubricated.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the mid shaft bearing support bolts (1,2).
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 37 N·m (27 lb ft).
- Install the pinion flange yoke to the differential pinion flange with
the reference marks. Secure the pinion flange yoke with 4 bolts and 4
nuts and washers.
Tighten
Tighten the propeller shaft bolts and nuts to 74 N·m (54 lb ft).
- Lower the vehicle.
