The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Condition/Concern:
Some dealers may have a Pontiac Vibe with an Airbag light on as well as a red OnStar® status LED. Dealers will find DTC U1088 in both the SDM and the VCIM.
Recommendation/Instructions:
Do not replace the SDM or VCIM.
There is an interpreter box in the vehicle called a VIU. It is located near the OnStar® VCIM and translates vehicle data so the OnStar VCIM can use it. when neither the SDM or VCIM can communicate with one another a DTC U1088 will set in either the SDM of VCIM. The VIU or associated wiring is normally the cause of the issue. If all circuits to the VIU check with no opens/shorts, a new VIU will be needed. Dealers can obtain the part through normal SPO channels.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
