Brake Shoe Replacement FWD

Caution: Avoid taking the following actions when you service wheel brake parts:

•	Do not grind brake linings.

•	Do not sand brake linings.

•	Do not clean wheel brake parts with a dry brush or with compressed air.

Some models or aftermarket brake parts may contain asbestos fibers which can become airborne in dust. Breathing dust with asbestos fibers may cause serious bodily harm. Use a water-dampened cloth in order to remove any dust on brake parts. Equipment is available commercially in order to perform this washing function. These wet methods prevent fibers from becoming airborne.
1. Remove the drum (17). Refer to Brake Drum Replacement .
2. Remove the upper return spring (8).
3. Remove the lower return spring (19).
4. Remove the following components from the front shoe (20):

•	The hold-down spring cup (21)

•	The hold-down spring (22)

•	The pin (1)

5. Remove the anchor spring (18).
6. Remove the front shoe with the adjuster lever (24)
7. Remove the adjuster lever and the adjuster spring (23) from the front shoe.
8. Remove the following components from the rear shoe (14):

•	The hold-down spring cup (16)

•	The hold-down spring (15)

•	The pin (4)

9. Disconnect the park brake cable from the park brake lever (12).
10. Remove the rear shoe.
11. Remove the following components:

•	The 2 C-shaped park brake lever washers (11,13)

•	The park brake lever

•	The adjuster strut (7,9,10)

12. Separate the adjuster strut components.

1. Measure the brake shoe lining thickness.

Specification
The minimum shoe lining thickness is 1.00 mm (0.039 in).

2. If the shoe lining is less than the specification, replace the brake shoes.
3. Inspect the drum brake hardware. Refer to Drum Brake Hardware Inspection .
4. Inspect the drum brake adjusting hardware. Refer to Drum Brake Adjusting Hardware Inspection .

1. Apply Lubriplate® Lubricant, GM P/N 1050109, Canadian P/N 5264008, or the equivalent, to the metal contact points on the backing plate (1) and the adjuster strut (3).
2. Assemble the adjuster strut (2,3,4).



3. Install the following components:

•	The adjuster strut (7,9,10)

•	The park brake lever (12)

•	The 2 C-shaped park brake lever washers (11,13)

•	The rear shoe (14)

4. Connect the park brake cable to the park brake lever.
5. Install the following components to the rear shoe:

•	The pin (4)

•	The hold-down spring (15)

•	The hold-down spring cup (16)

6. Install the adjuster lever (24) and the adjuster spring (23) to the front shoe (20).
7. Install the front shoe.
8. Install the anchor spring (18).
9. Install the following components to the front shoe:

•	The pin (1)

•	The hold-down spring (22)

•	The hold-down spring cup (21)

10. Install the lower return spring (19).
11. Install the upper return spring (8).
12. Adjust the drum brake if necessary. Refer to Drum Brake Adjustment .
13. Install the drum (17). Refer to Brake Drum Replacement .

Brake Shoe Replacement AWD

1. Remove the drum (16). Refer to Brake Drum Replacement .
2. Disconnect the return spring (9) from the shoes.
3. Remove the following components from the front shoe (20):

•	The hold-down spring cup (18)

•	The hold-down spring (19)

•	The pin (1)

4. Remove the anchor spring (17).
5. Remove the front shoe with the adjuster (22)
6. Remove the adjuster and the adjuster spring (21) from the front shoe.
7. Remove the following components from the rear shoe (13):

•	The hold-down spring cup (15)

•	The hold-down spring (14)

•	The pin (1)

8. Disconnect the park brake cable from the park brake lever (11).
9. Remove the rear shoe.
10. Remove the following components:

•	The 2 C-shaped park brake lever washers (12)

•	The park brake lever

•	The adjuster strut (7,8,10)

•	The return spring.

11. Separate the adjuster strut components.

1. Measure the brake shoe lining thickness.

Specification
The minimum shoe lining thickness is 1.00 mm (0.039 in).

2. If the shoe lining is less than the specification, replace the brake shoes.
3. Inspect the drum brake hardware. Refer to Drum Brake Hardware Inspection .
4. Inspect the drum brake adjusting hardware. Refer to Drum Brake Adjusting Hardware Inspection .

1. Apply Lubriplate® Lubricant, GM P/N 1050109, Canadian P/N 5264008, or the equivalent, to the metal contact points on the backing plate (1) and the adjuster strut (3).
2. Assemble the adjuster strut (2,3,5) and the return spring (4).



3. Install the following components:

•	The adjuster strut (7,8,10)

•	The return spring (9)

•	The park brake lever (11)

•	The 2 C-shaped park brake lever washers (12)

•	The rear shoe (13)

4. Connect the park brake cable to the park brake lever.
5. Install the following components to the rear shoe:

•	The pin (4)

•	The hold-down spring (14)

•	The hold-down spring cup (15)

6. Install the adjuster lever (22) and the adjuster spring (21) to the front shoe (20).
7. Install the front shoe.
8. Install the anchor spring (17).
9. Install the following components to the front shoe:

•	The pin (1)

•	The hold-down spring (19)

•	The hold-down spring cup (18)

10. Connect the return spring (9) to the shoes.
11. Adjust the drum brake if necessary. Refer to Drum Brake Adjustment .
12. Install the drum (16). Refer to Brake Drum Replacement .
