Whistle and/or Hoot Noise from Engine Compartment Under Light Acceleration with Transaxle at Normal Operating Temperatures (Replace Automatic Transaxle Cooler Hoses)

Subject:Whistle and/or Hoot Noise from Engine Compartment Under Light Acceleration with Transaxle at Normal Operating Temperatures (Replace Automatic Transaxle Cooler Hoses)

Models:2003-2006 Pontiac Vibe
with Automatic Transaxle (RPO MU4) and 1.8L Engine (VIN 8 -- RPO LV6)



Condition

Some customers may comment on a whistle and/or hoot noise coming from the engine compartment with the vehicle at operating temperature under light throttle, usually between 56-64 km/h (35-40 mph).

Cause

Resonance through the automatic transaxle oil cooler lines and hoses at a specific speed/frequency may be the cause

Correction

  1. Open the hood and install fender covers.
  2. Remove the electric cooling fan assembly. Refer to Cooling Fan Replacement - Electric in SI.
  3. Place a suitable drain pan under the automatic transaxle cooler lines.

  4. Object Number: 1742811  Size: SH
  5. Remove the two transaxle oil cooler lines from the radiator.
  6. Remove the two 10 mm bolts retaining the metal cooler lines to the lower radiator support. One of these bolts will be reused.
  7. Remove the automatic transaxle oil cooler hoses from the transaxle lines.
  8. Remove the lines and hoses from the vehicle.
  9. Remove the four spring clamps from the original hoses.
  10. Install the original four spring clamps on the new hoses, P/Ns 88974609 and 88974610.
  11. Important: 

       • The yellow paint mark is on the hose that is installed to the radiator.
       • The white paint mark is on the hose that is installed to the transaxle.
       • Make sure the new hoses are not twisted and/or bent when installed.

  12. Install the new hoses, P/Ns 88974609 and 88974610, as shown above.
  13. Install the spring clamps.

  14. Object Number: 1742823  Size: SH
  15. Install the retaining clamp, P/N 88974608, as shown above.
  16. Tighten
    Tighten the 10 mm bolt to 5 N·m(4 lb ft).

  17. Reinstall the electric cooling fans. Refer to Cooling Fan Replacement - Electric in SI.
  18. Check the automatic transaxle fluid level. Refer to Transmission Fluid Checking Procedure in SI.
  19. Remove the fender covers and close the hood.
  20. Remove the drain pan from under the vehicle.
  21. Road test the vehicle and verify the condition has been corrected.
