Disassembly Procedure

    Object Number: 238935 Size: SH
  1. Remove the caliper (1) from the vehicle. Refer to Front Brake Caliper Replacement .
  2. Remove and discard the caliper set ring (3).
  3. Remove and discard the piston boot (2).

  4. Insert a shop cloth (2) into the caliper in order to catch the piston.

    5. Caution: Wear safety glasses when using compressed air in order to prevent eye injury.

    Caution: Do not place fingers in front of the caliper piston(s) in an attempt to catch or protect it when applying compressed air. The piston(s) can fly out with force and could result in serious bodily injury.

    Notice: Use just enough air pressure to ease the piston out of the bore. You can damage a blown-out piston even with the padding.

  5. Apply compressed air to the caliper brake hose connector hole in order to remove the piston from the caliper.

  6. Remove and discard the piston seal.

    7. Object Number: 817140 Size: SH
  7. Remove the bleeder valve cap (13).
  8. Remove the bleeder valve (12).

Inspection Procedure

    Object Number: 817140 Size: SH

    Important: DO NOT use abrasives in order to clean the caliper components.

  1. Clean the following components in denatured alcohol or an equivalent brake parts cleaner:
    2. • The piston (8)
    • The caliper bracket (14)
    • The caliper housing (10)
  2. Dry the components and all the passages in the caliper housing using unlubricated, compressed air.
  3. Inspect the caliper bracket (14) and the caliper slide boots (15,20) for damage, wear, or corrosion. Replace the components if damage, wear or corrosion is evident. Refer to Front Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement .
  4. Inspect the piston (8) and the caliper housing (10) for damage, wear or corrosion. Replace the components if damage, wear or corrosion is evident.
  5. Inspect the caliper bore for cracks, scoring, pitting, or corrosion. Replace the caliper assembly if the bore is damaged.

Assembly Procedure

    Object Number: 817140 Size: SH
  1. Ensure the caliper slide pins (17, 21) are lubricated with lithium soap base glycol grease or Silicone Brake Lubricant, GM P/N 89021536, ACDelco P/N 89021537 (Canadian P/N 89021538), or equivalent. If necessary, refer to Front Disc Brake Hardware Replacement .

    2. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  2. Install the bleeder valve (12) to the caliper.

    3. Tighten
    Tighten the bleeder valve to 8.3 N·m (73.46 lb in).

  3. Install the bleeder valve cap (13).
  4. Lubricate the caliper bore and the NEW set ring (6) with Delco Supreme 11 brake fluid, GM P/N 12377967 (Canadian P/N 992667), or an equivalent DOT 3 brake fluid.
  5. Apply lithium soap base glycol grease to the NEW piston seal (9).
  6. Install the piston seal into the caliper bore. Verify the seal is not twisted.
  7. Apply lithium soap base glycol grease to the caliper piston (8).
  8. Install the piston into the caliper bore.
  9. Apply lithium soap base glycol grease to the NEW piston boot (7).
  10. Install the piston boot to the grooves on the piston.
  11. Install the piston boot to the grooves on the caliper housing.
  12. Install the NEW set ring to the caliper housing.
  13. Install the caliper to the vehicle. Refer to Front Brake Caliper Replacement .
