Removal Procedure

    Object Number: 817338 Size: SH
  1. Remove the following components. Refer to Rear Disc Brake Pads Replacement .
    2. • The clip (8)
    • The springs (7, 9)
    • The pad guide pins (5, 6)
    • The brake pads (2, 3)
    • The insulators (1, 4)

    Notice: Support the brake caliper with heavy mechanic wire, or equivalent, whenever it is separated from its mount and the hydraulic flexible brake hose is still connected. Failure to support the caliper in this manner will cause the flexible brake hose to bear the weight of the caliper, which may cause damage to the brake hose and in turn may cause a brake fluid leak.

  2. Support the caliper with wire in order to prevent damage to the brake hose.
  3. Remove the caliper bolts (1, 8).
  4. Remove the slide pins (2, 9).
  5. Remove the slide pin boots (3, 6, 7).

Inspection Procedure

    Important: DO NOT use abrasives in order to clean brake components.

  1. Clean the following components in denatured alcohol or an equivalent brake parts cleaner:
    2. • The clip (8)
    • The springs (7, 9)
    • The pad guide pins (5, 6)
    • The insulators (1, 4)
  2. Inspect the components for the following conditions:
    3. • Sufficient rebound
    • No deformation
    • No cracks
    • No wear
    • No rust
    • No dirt
    • If the components meet the above conditions, re-use the components.

  3. Clean the following components in denatured alcohol or an equivalent brake parts cleaner.
    4. • The bolts (1, 8)
    • The slide pins (2, 9)
    • The slide pin boots (3, 6, 7)
    • The caliper housing (10)
  4. Use unlubricated, compressed air in order to dry the components
  5. Inspect the slide pin bores of the caliper for corrosion and wear. Replace the caliper if the slide pin bores are damaged. Refer to Rear Brake Caliper Replacement .

Installation Procedure

  1. If the caliper piston (13) is not compressed into the caliper bore, complete the following steps:
    2. 1.1. Wrap the handle of a hammer with tape.
    1.2. Use the handle of a hammer in order to compress the caliper piston into the caliper bore.
  2. Lubricate the slide pins (2, 9) and to the slide pin boots (3, 6, 7) with lithium soap base glycol grease or Silicone Brake Lubricant, GM P/N 89021536, ACDelco P/N 89021537 (Canadian P/N 89021538), or equivalent.
  3. Install the slide pins and the slide pin boots to the caliper housing.

    4. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  4. Install the caliper (10) and the caliper bolts (1,8).

    5. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 46.6 N·m (34.37 lb ft).

  5. Remove the wire from the caliper.

  6. Apply disc brake grease to the pad side of the inner pad insulator (1).
  7. Apply disc brake grease to the pad side of the outer pad insulator (4).
  8. Install the following components. Refer to Rear Disc Brake Pads Replacement .
    9. • The clip (8)
    • The springs (7, 9)
    • The pad guide pins (5, 6)
    • The brake pads (2, 3)
    • The insulators (1, 4)
