Steering Angle Sensor Initialization and Steering Shaft Torque Sensor Zero Point Calibration Manual

Important: Clear the steering angle sensor calibration value, initialize the steering angle sensor, and calibrate the steering shaft torque sensor zero point if any of the following has occurred:

       • The power steering control module has been replaced.
       • The power steering link has been replaced.
       • Steering effort differs between left and right.

  1. Check for DTCs.
  2. • If DTC C1516 (Torque Sensor Zero Point Adjustment Incomplete) is stored, the steering shaft torque sensor zero point cannot be calibrated. Clear the DTC before starting calibration.
    • If DTC C1526 (Rotation Angle Sensor Initialization Incomplete) is stored, the steering angle sensor cannot be initialized. Clear the DTC before starting initialization.
    • If DTCs other than C1516 and C1526 are set, refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle .
  3. Pre-calibration check.
  4. 2.1. Turn the ignition switch Off.
2.2. Disconnect the power steering control module connector E32.
2.3. Turn the ignition switch On.

Important: If the measured value is 9 volts or less, the calibration cannot be performed. Recharge or replace the battery and then perform the calibration.

2.4. Measure the voltage between the power steering control module connector E32 terminal 6 and body ground. The voltage should be between 11 and 14 volts.
2.5. Turn the ignition switch Off.
2.6. Connect the power steering control module connector E32.
  5. Steering angle sensor calibration value erasure.
  6. 3.1. Set the steering wheel to the center point and align the front tires straight ahead.
3.2. Turn the ignition switch Off.
3.3. Connect a jumper wire between terminals 12 and 4 of the data link connector.
3.4. Turn the ignition switch On and then connect and disconnect the jumper wire between terminals 4 and 13 at least 20 times in 20 seconds (Jumper wire at terminal 12 is not disconnected).
3.5. Check that the P/S warning light blinks and then remains illuminated. The P/S warning light illumination indicates that DTC C1515 and DTC C1525 have been stored.
3.6. Turn the ignition switch Off.

Important: After erasing the steering angle sensor calibration value, the steering angle sensor initialization or steering shaft zero point calibration cannot be performed if the ignition switch is On.

  7. Steering shaft torque sensor zero point calibration.
  8.         Important: As the steering shaft torque sensor zero point calibration cannot be performed if DTC C1515 has not been stored, be sure to perform the steering angle sensor calibration value erasure before performing the steering shaft torque sensor zero point calibration.

4.1. Set the steering wheel to the center point and align the front tires straight ahead.
4.2. Turn the ignition switch Off.
4.3. Using a jumper wire, connect terminals 12 and 4 of the data link connector.
4.4. Turn the ignition switch ON and then connect terminals 13 and 4 of the data link connector (Jumper wire at terminal 4 is not disconnected).

Important: Do not touch the steering wheel during the calibration (for 3 seconds). The P/S warning light remains illuminated even when the calibration has been completed.

4.5. With terminals 12 and 4, and 13 and 4 connected, and the ignition switch to On, continue to perform the steering angle sensor initialization.
  9. Steering angle sensor initialization.
  10.         Important: As the steering angle sensor initialization cannot be performed if DTC C1525 has not been stored, be sure to perform the steering angle sensor calibration value erasure and steering shaft torque sensor zero point calibration before performing the steering angle sensor initialization.

5.1. Set the steering wheel to the center point and align the front tires straight ahead.

Important: Ensure that terminals 12 and 4 and 13 and 4 are connected and the ignition switch is On.

5.2. Disconnect and reconnect terminals 13 and 4. Disconnecting and reconnecting terminals 13 and 4 allows the power steering control module to change modes to steering angle sensor initialization mode.

Important: Do not turn the steering wheel sharply.

5.3. Turn the steering wheel to the left and right 45° or more. Then turn the steering wheel to the left or right 90° or more.

When the calibration has been completed normally, the P/S warning light goes from being illuminated to blinking at 0.125 second intervals.

Important: If DTCs other than C1515 and C1525 are set, refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle .

5.3. The P/S warning light remains illuminated if the calibration has not been completed normally. In this case, check for DTCs and perform calibration again if DTC C1515 and/or DTC C1525 is/are output. When performing the calibration again, perform it in the following order:
5.3.1. Steering angle sensor calibration value erasure
5.3.2. Steering shaft torque sensor zero point calibration
             5.3.3. Steering angle sensor initialization
5.4. Disconnect the jumper wire from the data link connector.
5.5. Turn the ignition switch to Off.
