J 1859-A Steering Wheel Puller
Removal Procedure
Caution: Refer to Steering Column in Lock Position Caution in the Preface section.
- LOCK the steering column and verify the front wheels are in the straight ahead position.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to
Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection.
- Remove the steering wheel module. Refer to
Steering Wheel Inflatable Restraint Module Replacement.
- Remove the steering wheel nut.
- Put match marks (1) on the steering wheel assembly and on the steering main shaft.
- Disconnect the connectors from the supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) coil.
Caution: When removing the steering wheel, use only the specified steering wheel puller. Do not hammer on the end of the steering column shaft. Hammering could loosen the plastic injections which maintain
the steering column rigidity.
- Use the
J 1859-A puller
in order to remove steering wheel.
- If the vehicle has audio controls on the steering wheel, remove the steering wheel control switch assembly. Refer to
Steering Wheel Control Switch Assembly Replacement.
- Remove the screw (2) from the right steering wheel spoke trim (1).
- Disengage the 2 pins and remove the right steering wheel spoke trim (1).
- If the vehicle has cruise control, remove the cruise control switch. Refer to
Cruise Control Switch Replacement.
- Remove the 2 screws (1, 2).
- Disengage the 2 claws (1, 2) and remove the lower steering wheel spoke trim.
- Remove the 2 steering wheel screws (1, 2).
Installation Procedure
- Install the 2 steering wheel screws (1, 2).
- Engage the 2 claws (1, 2) to install the lower steering wheel spoke trim.
- Install the 2 screws (1, 2).
- If the vehicle has cruise control, install the cruise control switch. Refer to
Cruise Control Switch Replacement.
- If the vehicle has audio controls on the steering wheel, install the steering wheel control switch assembly. Refer to
Steering Wheel Control Switch Assembly Replacement.
- Engage the 2 pins to install the right steering wheel spoke trim (1).
- Install the screw (2) to the right steering wheel spoke trim (1).
- Verify the front wheels are in the straight ahead position.
- Center the SIR coil. Refer to
Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Centering.
- Align the match marks (1) on the steering wheel assembly and on the steering main shaft.
- Install the steering wheel assembly.
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.
- Install the steering wheel nut. Tighten the nut to
50 N·m(37 lb ft).
- Connect the connectors to the SIR coil.
- Install the steering wheel module. Refer to
Steering Wheel Inflatable Restraint Module Replacement.
- Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to
Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection.
