Circuit Description

The automatic transmission fluid (ATF) temperature sensor converts the fluid temperature into a resistance value which is input into the engine control module (ECM). Based on the resistance, the ECM determines the ATF temperature and detects opens or shorts in the ATF temperature circuit.

After running the vehicle for a certain period, the ATF temperature should increase. When the ATF temperature is below 20°C (68°F), or when the ATF temperature is 110°C (230°F) or more and the engine coolant temperature reaches 60°C (140°F) after engine cold start, the ECM interprets this as a fault, illuminates the MIL and stores the DTC.

DTC Descriptor

This diagnostic procedure supports the following DTCs:

DTC P0711 Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor "A" Performance

Conditions for Running the DTC

The engine is running.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The ECM will set the DTC if the following conditions are present:

    • Condition A, the ECM both of the following conditions:
       - Intake air and engine coolant temperatures are more than -10°C (14°F) at engine start.
       - After normal driving for over 19 minutes and 9 kilometers (6 miles) or more, ATF temperature is less then 20° C(68°F).
    • Condition B, the ECM detects both the following conditions:
       - Engine coolant temperature is less than 35°C (95°F) at engine start.
       - ATF temperature 110°C (230°F) or more when engine coolant temperature reaches 60°C (140°F)

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

    • DTC P0711 is a type C DTC.
    • The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illuminates the first time the diagnostic runs with the fault active.

Conditions for Clearing the MIL/DTC

The DTC will clear when conditions for setting the DTC have been repaired.
