The Park/Neutral Position (PNP) Switch is externally mounted on the transmission manual shaft. As the gear range selector lever is moved, the state of the P/N switch may change, causing the Park/Neutral Signal circuit to open or close. An open circuit or switch indicates a drive range and a low voltage, 0 volts, signal at the engine control module (ECM). A closed circuit or switch indicates PARK or NEUTRAL and a high voltage, 12 volts, signal at the ECM.
The ECM uses the PNP Switch status in order to enable starter operation.
If the PNP switch signal indicates low, open, when the transmission is in PARK or NEUTRAL for a specified length of time, DTC P0851 sets. DTC P0851 is a type C DTC.
This Diagnostic procedure supports the following DTC:
DTC P0851 Park/Neutral Position (PNP) Switch Circuit Low Voltage
• | No transmission serial data DTC U0100. |
• | The ignition voltage is 9-18 volts. |
• | The transmission gear selector serial data message has been received and is valid. |
• | The engine speed is less than 8192 RPM. |
The park/neutral switch circuit is open, 0 volts, for 3 seconds while the TCM is reporting the gear selector is in PARK or NEUTRAL.
• | The ECM does not illuminate the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL). |
• | The ECM disables engine cranking. |
• | The ECM stores the operating conditions when the Conditions for Setting the DTC are met. This information is stored as a Failure Record. |
• | The ECM stores DTC P0851 in ECM history. |
• | The ECM clears the DTC from ECM history if the vehicle completes 40 warm-up cycles without a non emission diagnostic fault occurring. |
• | The ECM cancels the default action when the ignition is OFF long enough in order to power down the ECM. |
• | A scan tool can clear the DTC. |

Important: Before clearing the DTC, use the scan tool in order to record the Freeze Frame and Failure Records. Using the Clear Info function erases the Freeze Frame and Failure Records from the ECM and TCM.
