Saab 9-7X Electronics Ordering Process

Subject:Saab 9-7X Electronics Ordering Process

Models:2005-2008 Saab 9-7X

This bulletin is being revised to add the 2008 model year and remove the restriction on XM digital radio receivers. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 05-08-44-020A (Section 08 - Body and Accessories).

Important: Part numbers for the components identified in this bulletin are retrievable using a Tech 2®. This eliminates the need to remove the component solely to determine the part number. The part number can typically be found under the "Data Display", "ID Information" or "Module Information" Menu selection and is titled "8 Digit GM Part Number", "End Model Part Number" or a similar data parameter. Note that if the component was removed during the diagnostic process, then the part number found on the part label can be used to order the replacement part.

The purpose of this bulletin is to inform Saab dealers of the 9-7X Parts Exchange Program for radios, XM receivers, instrument panel (IP) clusters, DVDs, and OnStar®. These 9-7X components have been designated as exchange parts. By working closely with our dealers and technicians through the parts exchange process, the GM team will gain a better understanding of any field concerns that may develop.

If a customer comes to the dealer with an electronics concern, please follow the repair information and diagnostics found in Service Information.

If your diagnosis points to a fault with the radio, XM receiver, IP cluster, OnStar® or DVD, obtain an exchange unit as follows:

Radio Replacement Procedure

Replacement radios must be obtained from an Authorized Electronic Service Center (ESC).

Replacement parts are usually shipped out within 24 hours and a pre-paid return package label will be included for returning the original failed part. By returning the original parts within 30 days you will avoid a significant non-return core charge.

Canada:

Replacement radios must be obtained from an Electronic Service Centre (ESC) in Canada.

XM Digital Radio Receiver

Replacement XM digital radio receivers must be obtained from an Authorized Electronic Service Center (ESC).

The XM Digital Radio Receiver is part of the S-band satellite radio system. GM has partnered with S-band service provider, XM Satellite Radio (U.S.) and Canadian Satellite Radio (Canada), to offer this service.

If a customer comes to the dealership with S-band (XM Radio) concerns, please follow the repair information and diagnostics found in the Entertainment sub-section of Service Information (SI).

Canada

Replacement XM digital radio receivers must be obtained from an authorized Electronic Service Centre (ESC) in Canada.

IP Clusters (U.S.)

Replacement IP clusters must be obtained from an authorized Electronic Service Center (ESC).

Replacement parts are usually shipped out within 24 hours, and a pre-paid return package label will be included for returning the original failed part. By returning the original part within 30 days, you will avoid a significant non-return core charge.

Canada:

Replacement IP clusters must be obtained from an authorized Electronic Service Centre (ESC) in Canada.

OnStar® (U.S. and Canada)

The OnStar® system requires the interaction of several independent systems to properly function. These systems include the following:

    • The in-vehicle OnStar® hardware
    • A third party cellular network
    • The OnStar® Call Center application

In many instances, in-vehicle hardware diagnosis can be readily performed. However, diagnosis of the interaction between the three systems presents some unique challenges.

For this reason, when a customer expresses a concern with the OnStar® system, first attempt to diagnose the system using published diagnostic information. If your diagnosis points to a fault with any of the following components, a call to the GM Technical Assistance Center (TAC) will be required to obtain a part for service.

    • VCIM (Vehicle Communications and Interface Module [TRANSCEIVER ASM-COMN CTR CALL])
    • VCU (Vehicle Communications Unit)
    • VIU (Vehicle Interface Unit)

Important: Only modules and components involved in a parts restriction program require a call to TAC in order to obtain the necessary part. Parts such as antennas, cables, etc. are available through the normal channels.

When contacting TAC with an OnStar® concern, the availability of certain information from the vehicle will streamline the process for the dealership technician.

The technician should have the following information available for the TAC consultant:

    • The Electronic Serial Number (ESN)
    • The Station ID (STID)
    • The phone number (MIN) (available on OnStar® Gen 3 and newer systems only)
    • The transceiver ID (available on OnStar® Gen 3 and newer systems only)

The technician should perform the following steps using a Tech 2® with the latest software version to provide the information below to the TAC consultant.

  1. Connect the Tech 2®.
  2. Enter Diagnostics and build the vehicle.
  3. Select Body.
  4. In the Body menu, proceed to OnStar®.

Obtaining Electronic Serial Number, Station ID and Part Number Information

To obtain the Electronic Serial Number (ESN), the Station ID (STID) or the part number, go to OnStar® and then Module 2 Information.

Important: The information obtained from the vehicle should not be modified in any way unless directed by the TAC consultant.

Obtaining Transceiver ID and Phone Number Information

To obtain the transceiver ID and phone number, select OnStar® and go to Special Functions. From here, select Program Phone. This will display the phone number. Press Done and the second screen will display the transceiver ID.

Contact GM TAC in the U.S. at 1-877-446-8227. In Canada contact GM TAC at 1-800-263-7740 (English) or 1-800-263-7960 (French). The prompt for OnStar® callers is combined with the XM radio prompt. The TAC consultant will verify your diagnosis and, if appropriate, order the replacement OnStar® module from Autocraft Electronics.

DVDs (U.S.)

Replacement DVDs must be obtained from an Authorized Electronic Service Center (ESC).

Replacement parts are usually shipped out within 24 hours, and a pre-paid return package label will be included for returning the original part. By returning the original part, you will avoid a significant non-return core charge.

Canada:

Replacement DVDs must be obtained from an authorized Electronic Service Centre (ESC) in Canada.

General Exchange Program Information

When ordering through one of the Electronic Service Centers (ESCs), the following information is needed to process dealer order(s):

    • Dealer telephone number (preferred) or Dealer Code
    • Part number currently in the vehicle
    • The part number can be retrieved with the Tech 2 scan tool
If the IP cluster has been removed, the part number is listed on the label of the IP cluster.
    • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), mileage, and delivery date
    • Repair Order (R.O.) number
    • Description of issue

Important: You will have 30 days to either return the customer’s original core or the new/remanufactured (unused) unit to the designated Electronic Service Center per GM policy. After the 30 days expire, the dealer will be liable for the full core value of the unit and your account will be debited by Saab.
