Starter Replacement LZ4

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 368799  Size: SH
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  2. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  3. Remove the flywheel inspection cover bolts.
  4. Remove the flywheel inspection cover.
  5. Remove the electrical connections from the starter motor.

  7. Remove the starter motor mounting bolts.
  8. Remove the starter motor.

Installation Procedure

    Notice: Before installing the starter motor to the engine, tighten the nut next to the cap on the solenoid BAT terminal. If this terminal is not tight in the solenoid cap, the cap may be damaged during installation of electrical connections and cause the starter motor to fail later.

  1. Install the starter motor to the engine.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the starter motor mounting bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

  5. Install the electrical connection to the battery terminal on the solenoid.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the battery terminal nut to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).

  7. Install the electrical connections to the S terminal on the solenoid.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten solenoid S terminal nut to 3 N·m (27 lb in).

  9. Install the flywheel inspection cover.
  10. Install the flywheel inspection cover bolts.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the flywheel inspection cover bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  12. Lower vehicle.
  13. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .

Starter Replacement LY7

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  3. Remove the left catalytic converter. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement - Left Side .
  4. Remove the knock sensor Bank 2. Refer to Knock Sensor Replacement - Bank 2 .

  6. Remove the starter solenoid BAT terminal nut.

  7. Object Number: 1394041  Size: SH
  8. Disconnect the engine harness electrical connector.

  9. Object Number: 1394040  Size: SH
  10. Disconnect the starter motor bolts and the starter.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 1394040  Size: SH
  1. Position the starter motor to the engine block.
  2. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  3. Install the starter bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  5. Connect the electrical connector to the starter.

  6. Object Number: 1644827  Size: SH
  7. Install the starter solenoid BAT terminal nut.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 13 N·m (115 lb in).

  9. Install the knock sensor Bank 2. Refer to Knock Sensor Replacement - Bank 2 .
  10. Install the left catalytic converter. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement - Left Side .
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .

Starter Replacement LAT

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  3. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector (2) from the generator control module coolant pump (1).

  4. Object Number: 1811960  Size: SH
  5. Remove the generator control module coolant pump bolt (3).
  6. Remove the generator control module coolant pump (1) (with the hoses attached) from the oil pan.
  7. Reposition and secure the generator control module coolant pump (with the hoses attached) out of the way.

  8. Object Number: 1891303  Size: SH
  9. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector (1) from the starter.

  10. Object Number: 1891299  Size: SH
  11. Remove the positive battery cable to starter motor nut (1).
  12. Remove the positive battery cable lead (2) from the starter motor.

  13. Object Number: 1814106  Size: SH
  14. Remove the starter motor bolts and starter.

Installation Procedure

    Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  1. Install the starter motor and bolts.
  2. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 53 N·m (39 lb ft).

  3. Install the positive battery cable lead (2) to the starter motor.
  4. Install the positive battery cable to starter motor nut (1).
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  6. Connect the engine wiring harness electrical connector (1) to the starter.

  7. Object Number: 1891294  Size: SH
  8. Unsecure the generator control module coolant pump.
  9. Position the generator control module coolant pump (1) (with the hoses attached) to the oil pan. Ensure that the anti-rotation tab (2) is inserted into the hole in the oil pan.
  10. Install the generator control module coolant pump bolt (3).
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 22 N·m (16 lb ft).

  12. Connect the engine wiring harness electrical connector (2) to the generator control module coolant pump (1).
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
