Removal Procedure
- Hoist the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
.
- Place drain pans under the vehicle as needed.
Important: Protect the steering gear boots from sharp tools and from the sharp edges of surrounding components.
- Remove the steering gear cylinder pipe retaining plate bolt (1) and retaining plate (2).
- Loosen the steering gear cylinder pipe fittings (3,4).
- Remove both steering gear cylinder pipes from the steering gear (1).
- Remove and discard the steering gear cylinder pipe seals (4) from the steering gear at the valve end (5).
Installation Procedure
- Inspect the steering gear cylinder pipes (1) for the following items:
- Replace the steering gear cylinder pipes (1) as needed.
- Lubricate and install the steering gear cylinder pipe seals (2) onto the steering gear cylinder pipes (1).
Important: You must install the shorter steering gear cylinder pipe first.
- Place the steering gear cylinder pipe (2) into the steering gear at the valve end of the steering gear (3).
- Start the steering gear cylinder pipe fitting (1) in the steering gear (4) but do not torque it.
- Place the longer steering gear cylinder pipe (2) into the steering gear at the valve end of the steering gear (3).
- Start the steering gear cylinder pipe fitting (1) in the steering gear (4) but do not torque it.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
- Install the steering gear cylinder pipe retaining plate (2) and bolt (1).
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 12 N·m (106 lb in).
- Tighten the steering gear cylinder pipe fittings (3).
Tighten
Tighten the fittings to 19 N·m (14 lb ft).
- Clean any excess power steering fluid from the vehicle and remove the drain pans.
- Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to
