Removal Procedure

  1. Hoist the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  2. Place drain pans under the vehicle as needed.

  3. Object Number: 796366  Size: SH

    Important: Protect the steering gear boots from sharp tools and from the sharp edges of surrounding components.

  4. Remove the steering gear cylinder pipe retaining plate bolt (1) and retaining plate (2).

  5. Object Number: 796368  Size: SH
  6. Loosen the steering gear cylinder pipe fittings (3,4).
  7. Remove both steering gear cylinder pipes from the steering gear (1).
  8. Remove and discard the steering gear cylinder pipe seals (4) from the steering gear at the valve end (5).

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 796369  Size: SH
  1. Inspect the steering gear cylinder pipes (1) for the following items:
  2. • Cracks
    • Dents
    • Damage to the threads
  3. Replace the steering gear cylinder pipes (1) as needed.
  4. Lubricate and install the steering gear cylinder pipe seals (2) onto the steering gear cylinder pipes (1).

  5. Object Number: 796370  Size: SH

    Important: You must install the shorter steering gear cylinder pipe first.

  6. Place the steering gear cylinder pipe (2) into the steering gear at the valve end of the steering gear (3).
  7. Start the steering gear cylinder pipe fitting (1) in the steering gear (4) but do not torque it.

  9. Place the longer steering gear cylinder pipe (2) into the steering gear at the valve end of the steering gear (3).
  10. Start the steering gear cylinder pipe fitting (1) in the steering gear (4) but do not torque it.
  11. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  12. Install the steering gear cylinder pipe retaining plate (2) and bolt (1).
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  14. Tighten the steering gear cylinder pipe fittings (3).
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the fittings to 19 N·m (14 lb ft).

  16. Clean any excess power steering fluid from the vehicle and remove the drain pans.
  17. Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
