1. Brake Warning Indicator Malfunction

Circuit/System Description

The body control module (BCM) supplies a signal to the brake fluid level switch monitoring the level of brake fluid in the master cylinder. When the BCM sees the brake fluid level switch input grounded, it sends a serial data message to the instrument panel cluster (IPC) to turn ON the Red Brake Warning indicator.

Conditions for Running the DTC

The ignition is ON.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

Low brake fluid is detected.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

    • The EBCM disables the antilock brake system (ABS)/traction control system (TCS) dynamic rear proportion (DRP) and vehicle stability enhancement system (VSES).
    • The ABS indicator illuminates.
    • The Traction Control indicator illuminates.
    • The Red Brake Warning indicator illuminates.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

    • The condition for the DTC is no longer present.
    • The EBCM automatically clears the history DTC when a current DTC is not detected in 100 consecutive drive cycles.

Diagnostic Aids

Ensure the master cylinder reservoir is at the proper fluid level.

Scan Tool Data List

Circuit/System Verification

  1. Inspect for proper brake fluid level, the fluid level should be at or above the proper level.
  2. If low, refer to Brake Fluid Loss .
  3. Ignition ON, observe the scan tool Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) Brake Fluid parameter. The reading should be OK.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the brake fluid level switch.
  2. Test for less than 1 ohm of resistance between the ground circuit terminal A and ground.
  3. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
  4. Ignition ON, verify the scan tool EBCM Brake Fluid parameter is OK.
  5. If not the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the IPC.
  6. Install a 3A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal B and ground. Verify the scan tool EBCM Brake Fluid parameter is Low.
  7. If not the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the IPC.
  8. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the brake fluid level switch.

Component Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the brake fluid level switch.
  2. Test for less than 2300 ohms between the ground terminal A and the signal terminal B.
  3. If greater than specified value, replace the brake fluid level switch.
