Condition

Some customers may comment on a zipper/grinding type noise coming from the engine compartment or power steering pump at initial start up during cold temperatures, usually below 10°F (12°C). This noise may last for approximately 20 minutes.

Cause

When the power steering fluid is cold, it may be pulled out of the reservoir quicker than it can be put back in. This may cause the inlet pipe in the reservoir to become uncovered, allowing air to be pumped into the power steering system. No effect on steering performance has been noted.

Correction

Verify that the power steering reservoir is filled with fluid. If it is, then replace the power steering reservoir with P/N 25780649. This new reservoir has an inlet pipe with a different configuration to reduce the possibility of air being drawn into the system. Follow the Remote Power Steering Fluid Reservoir Replacement procedure in SI.

Important: After installation, noise may still be possible with the new reservoir until trapped air has circulated through the system and been released through the reservoir vent.
