Service Update for Inventory and Customer Vehicles-Reduced Hybrid Battery Life-Expires with Base Warranty

Subject:07141 -- Service Update for Inventory and Customer - Reduced Hybrid Battery Life - Expires with Base Warranty

Models:2007 Saturn Aura Green Line

THIS SERVICE UPDATE INCLUDES VEHICLES IN RETAILER INVENTORY AND CUSTOMER VEHICLES THAT RETURN FOR ANY TYPE OF SERVICE, AND WILL EXPIRE AT THE END OF THE INVOLVED VEHICLE'S NEW VEHICLE LIMITED WARRANTY PERIOD.

Purpose

This bulletin provides a service procedure to reprogram the 36-volt hybrid battery pack on certain 2007 model year Saturn Aura Green Line vehicles. The current calibration on these vehicles may shorten the life of the hybrid battery.

This service procedure should be completed as soon as possible on involved vehicles currently in retailer inventory and customer vehicles that return to the retailer for any type of service during the New Vehicle Limited Warranty coverage period.

Vehicles Involved

A list of involved vehicles currently in retailer inventory is available on the "Service Update Bulletin Information" link under the "Service" tab in DealerWorld. Customer vehicles that return for service, for any reason, and are still covered under the vehicle's base warranty, and are within the VIN breakpoints provided below, should be checked for vehicle eligibility in the appropriate system listed below.

Service Procedure

Tech 2 Pass-Thru Method for the Battery Energy Control Module (BECM)

CALIBRATION INFORMATION

Do not attempt to order the calibration number from GMSPO. The calibration numbers required for this service procedure are programmed into control modules via a Techline Tech 2® scan tool and TIS 2 Web with the calibration update. Use TIS 2 Web version 6.0 for 2007 (available on 06/03/07) and on TIS DVD version 6.0/2007 or later, which will be mailed to dealers on 06/13/2007 . If you cannot access the calibration, call the Techline Customer Support Center at 1-800-828-6860 and it will be provided.

Notice: Before reprogramming, please check the battery condition to prevent a reprogramming error of any of the modules due to battery discharge. Battery voltage must be between 12.5 and 13 volts during reprogramming. If the vehicle battery is not fully charged, use jumper cables from an additional battery. Be sure to turn off or disable any system that may put a load on the battery, such as automatic headlamps, daytime running lights, interior lights, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system, radio, engine cooling fan, etc. A programming failure or control module damage may occur if battery voltage guidelines are not observed. Only use approved Midtronics charger or jumper packs, etc. to maintain proper battery voltage during programming.

The ignition switch must be in the proper position. The Tech 2® prompts you to turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. DO NOT change the position of the ignition switch during the programming procedure, unless instructed to do so.

Make certain all tool connections are secure, including the following components and circuits:

    • The RS-232 communication cable port
    • The connection at the data link connector (DLC)
    • The voltage supply circuits

DO NOT disturb the tool harnesses while programming. If an interruption occurs during the programming procedure, programming failure or control module damage may occur.

DO NOT turn OFF the ignition if the programming procedure is interrupted or unsuccessful. Ensure that all control module and DLC connections are secure and the Tech 2 software is up to date.

  1. Verify that there is a battery charge of 12.5 to 13 volts. The battery must be able to maintain a charge during programming. Use an additional jump battery if necessary. Only use approved Midtronics charger or Jumper Packs, etc. to maintain proper battery voltage during programming.
  2. Pre-Programming Instructions (Before programming the battery energy control module (BECM), carefully review the information below.)

    • Some vehicles will require two separate programming events. If two programming events are required, the following two selections will be displayed on the TIS 2 Web Supported Controller screen: BECM Hybrid Battery Software Enhancement and BECM Hybrid Battery Voltage Correction. The BECM Hybrid Battery Voltage Correction must be performed first. Do NOT attempt to program the BECM Hybrid Battery Software Enhancement calibration first unless it is the ONLY option displayed on the TIS 2 Web Supported Controller screen.
    • The Replace and Program ECU selection is required for both programming events. You may select this option from the TIS 2 Web Select Diagnostic Tool and Programming Process screen. Do NOT select Reprogram ECU.
    • When preparing to program the BECM with the Hybrid Battery Voltage calibration, ignore the replace controller message on the TIS 2 Web Tech 2 Pass Thru: Replace Instructions screen. Select next from this screen.
  3. Reprogram the battery energy control module (BECM). Refer to SI and Service Programming System (SPS) documentation for programming instructions, if required.
