The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

On rare occasions, the TEMP lamp may illuminate and/or the air conditioning may become inoperative while driving at random conditions. If the Tech 2 Engine Data List is monitored during the concern, it will be noted that the A/C Relay Command switches from On to Off and the ECT Sensor may read as high as 270 F (132 C). Typically, no DTCs will be stored.

This may be a result of having the top of the surge tank outlet and auxiliary heater pump inlet hoses reversed. The top of these hoses are the same diameter so it is possible to reverse them during vehicle assembly or engine/cooling system repairs. As a result, this concern will most likely be noticed on low mileage vehicles, or shortly after engine/cooling system repairs.

Recommendation/Instructions:

If this concern is experienced, use a Tech 2 to monitor the A/C Relay Command and ECT Sensor in the Engine Data List. If the A/C Relay Command switches from On to Off when this occurs, and the ECT Sensor reads abnormally high when this occurs, inspect the following locations:

  1. Inspect the surge tank outlet hose to ensure that the top of it is connected to the bottom of the surge tank as shown below. Although it may be hard to see with the hose clamp installed, the top of the hose is also labeled "tank" in white letters, indicating that it should be connected to the surge tank.

  2. Object Number: 1870073 Size: MF
  3. Inspect the heater inlet hose to ensure that it is connected to the bottom of the heater coolant pump as shown below. Although it may be hard to see with the hose clamp installed, the top of the hose is also labeled "pump" in white letters, indicating that it should be connected to the heater coolant pump.

  4. Object Number: 1871128 Size: MF

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
