THIS PROGRAM IS IN EFFECT UNTIL NOVEMBER 30, 2008.

Condition

On certain 2008 Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura vehicles, a hanger used to secure the exhaust system to the underbody of the vehicle may separate. If the hanger separates, the driver would hear a rattle or clunking noise when driving over rough roads.

Correction

Dealers/retailers are to install a new design hanger to support the exhaust system.

Important: Dealers/retailers are to confirm vehicle eligibility prior to beginning repairs by using the system(s) below. Not all vehicles within the above breakpoints may be involved.

-- GM dealers and Canadian Saturn retailers should use GMVIS.

-- Saturn US retailers should use AS400 system.

Parts Information

GM, Saturn Canada Only: Parts required to complete this program are to be obtained from General Motors Service and Parts Operations (GMSPO). Please refer to your "involved vehicles listing" before ordering parts. Normal orders should be placed on a DRO = Daily Replenishment Order. In an emergency situation, parts should be ordered on a CSO = Customer Special Order.

Saturn US Only: A pre-shipment of the required parts to perform this repair has been sent to involved Saturn US retailers from Saturn Service Parts Operations (SSPO).

Service Procedure

  1. Lift and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in SI.
  2. Caution: In order to avoid being burned, do not service the exhaust system while it is still hot. Service the system when it is cool.

    Caution: Always wear protective goggles and gloves when removing exhaust parts as falling rust and sharp edges from worn exhaust components could result in serious personal injury.

    Important: The exhaust isolators (1) are located before the resonator on the muffler assembly. The exhaust isolators (1) are pushed onto the rod hanger bullet/mushroom head. Remove and replace both exhaust isolators (1).

  3. Support the exhaust system at the rear of the resonator with a post jack to prevent over stressing the flex coupler.

  5. Remove the two fasteners (3) at the catalytic converter (2) to flex coupler (1) location.
  6. Important: Apply grease to the exhaust isolator and hanger rod to ease in the removal of the exhaust isolator.

  7. Remove the isolator (1) from the muffler hanger rod (2).

  9. Remove the isolator (2) from the body hanger rod (1).
  10. Install the isolator (2) to the body hanger rod (1).

  11. Object Number: 2005218  Size: SH
  12. Install the isolator (1) to the muffler hanger rod (2).
  13. Install the two fasteners (3) at the catalytic converter (2) to flex coupler (1) location.
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the two fasteners to 25 N·m (18 ft lb).

  15. Remove the post jack supporting the exhaust system.
  16. Lower the vehicle.

Courtesy Transportation

The General Motors Courtesy Transportation program is intended to minimize customer inconvenience when a vehicle requires a repair that is covered by the New Vehicle Limited Warranty. The availability of courtesy transportation to customers whose vehicles are within the warranty coverage period and involved in a product program is very important in maintaining customer satisfaction. Dealers/retailers are to ensure that these customers understand that shuttle service or some other form of courtesy transportation is available and will be provided at no charge. GM dealers should refer to the General Motors Service Policies and Procedures Manual for Courtesy Transportation guidelines. Saturn US retailers should refer to GM messenger bulletins SAG20060292/SAG20060295 for Courtesy Transportation guidelines. Saturn Canada retailers should refer to applicable Home Office letter on this subject.

2. Check your Saturn SERVICELINE.XL Claim Memorandum daily. Remember to code the claim as a WC sale type, and VC case type. Contact your field representative if you need assistance.

3. Submit courtesy transportation using normal labor operations for courtesy transportation as indicated in GM messenger bulletins SAG20060292/SAG20060295.

Customer Notification

General Motors will notify customers of this program on their vehicle (see copy of customer letter included with this bulletin).

Dealer Program Responsibility

All unsold new vehicles in dealers'retailers' possession and subject to this program must be held and inspected/repaired per the service procedure of this program bulletin before customers take possession of these vehicles.

Dealers/retailers are to service all vehicles subject to this program at no charge to customers, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, through November 30, 2008.

Customers who have recently purchased vehicles sold from your vehicle inventory, and for which there is no customer information indicated on the dealer listing, are to be contacted by the dealer/retailer. Arrangements are to be made to make the required correction according to the instructions contained in this bulletin. A copy of the customer letter is provided in this bulletin for your use in contacting customers. Program follow-up cards should not be used for this purpose, since the customer may not as yet have received the notification letter.

In summary, whenever a vehicle subject to this program enters your vehicle inventory, or is in your dealership/facility for service through November 30, 2008, you must take the steps necessary to be sure the program correction has been made before selling or releasing the vehicle.

We have learned that on your 2008 model year Pontiac G6 or Saturn Aura vehicle, a hanger used to secure the exhaust system to the underbody of the vehicle may separate. If the hanger separates, you would hear a rattle or clunking noise when driving over rough roads.

Your satisfaction with your 2008 model year Pontiac G6 or Saturn Aura vehicle is very important to us, so we are announcing a program to prevent this condition or, if it has occurred, to fix it.

What We Will Do: Your GM dealer/retailer will install a new design hanger to support the exhaust system. This service will be performed for you at no charge until November 30, 2008.

What You Should Do: To limit any possible inconvenience, we recommend that you contact your dealer/retailer as soon as possible to schedule an appointment for this repair. By scheduling an appointment, your dealer/retailer can ensure that the necessary parts will be available on your scheduled appointment date.

Customer Reply Form: The enclosed customer reply form identifies your vehicle. Presentation of this form to your dealer/retailer will assist in making the necessary correction in the shortest possible time. If you no longer own this vehicle, please let us know by completing the form and mailing it back to us.

Courtesy Transportation:
