Removal Procedure

  1. Detach the corresponding front wheel.

  2. Object Number: 2001518  Size: SH
  3. Detach the axle shaft from wheel hub.
  4. • Remove the nut (2) from the axle shaft.
    • Counterhold at the front wheel hub with J 28733-B KM-6610 (1).

  5. Press the tie rod out of the steering knuckle using the KM-161-B  (1) together with the hook KM-161-B KM-161-2 .
  6. Detach the swing arm (1) from the spring strut support tube.
  7. Counterhold at the flattened areas with a open-ended wrench.

  8. Remove the guide joint from the steering knuckle.
  9. • Remove the bolt.
    • Spread the steering knuckle with KM-915  (2).
    • Pull the guide joint out of the steering knuckle.

    Important: During this process, draw the steering knuckle outwards, use the wheel hub remover if necessary.

  10. Press the axle shaft out of the wheel hub.

  11. Object Number: 1937859  Size: LH
  12. If present, remove the lower engine compartment cover.
  13. Important: Oil runs out. Place a drip pan beneath and close off openings with plugs.

  14. Remove the axle shaft from transmission and knock off the intermediate shaft.
  15. • Axle shaft, left
       - U18 XER
       - KM-313 (1) and KM-6003 (2).
    • Axle shaft, right
       - U18 XER
       - KM-313 (1) and KM-6003 (2).

    Important: Do not put it on top of the boots.

  16. Take care when putting down the axle shaft.

Installation Procedure

  1. Replace the retaining ring (1) at the axle shaft.

  2. Object Number: 1947357  Size: LH

    Important: 

       • Use the MK-6332 in order to avoid damaging the transmission seal ring.
       • If the toothing on the axle shaft (1) has passed through the MK-6332  (2), pull the MK-6332   (2) downwards, arrow, and remove it. Do not engage the axle shaft (1) yet.

  3. Insert the axle shaft (1) into the transmission.
  4. • Coat the toothing and bearing points with transmission fluid.
    • Insert the MK-6332   (2) into the transmission.
    • Insert the axle shaft (1) into the MK-6332  (2) on the transmission.
  5. Insert the axle shaft into wheel hub.
  6. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  7. Attach the guide joint to the steering knuckle.
  8. Use NEW nuts.

    Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  9. Attach the swing arm to spring strut support tube.
  10. • Use NEW nuts.

    Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 55 N·m (40 lb ft).

    • Counterhold at the flattened areas with open-ended wrench.
  11. Attach the tie rod end to the steering knuckle.
  12. Release at the hex.

    Tighten
    Tighten the new nut of tie rod end 30 N·m (22 lb ft) plus 90 degrees, plus 15 degrees.

  13. Attach the axle shaft to the wheel hub.
  14. Tighten
    Tighten to 150 N·m (111 lb ft), undo 45 degrees, then tighten to 250 N·m (185 lb ft).

    • Use the NEW nuts.
    • Counterhold against the wheel hub with J 28733-B and extension J 28733-B KM-956-1.
  15. Install the front wheel .
  16. Tighten
    Tighten to 110 N·m (81 lb ft).

  17. Inspect the transmission fluid level.
  18. • F 17+, refer to Transmission Fluid Check .
    • AF17, refer to Transmission Fluid Check .
    • Correct if necessary.
  19. If present, install the lower engine compartment cover.
