Engine Rattle Noise, Rough Idle, and SES Light with DTCs P0016 and/or P0017 - keywords inspect timing belt tensioner

This PI was superceded to remove the reference from the PI body and Admin notes to contacting Brand Quality. Please discard PIP4411.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

A technician may comment on an engine rattle noise, rough idle, and SES light with DTCs P0016 and/or P0017. This may be the result of a broken timing belt tensioner spring.

If this concern is encountered, inspect for a loose timing belt and broken timing belt tensioner spring. If the timing belt tensioner spring is broken, it will move freely without applying tension to the belt. If a broken timing belt tensioner is found, replace the timing belt and timing belt tensioner.

Note: If either of these DTC's reset after replacement of the belt and tensioner, please make sure that the procedure for "Timing Belt Replacement" in eSI was followed. If the crank is at TDC both MK-6340 (camshaft gear locks) and MK-6628 (camshaft alignment guide) must fit to engine. If either tool will not engage properly the timing procedure should be rechecked.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
