Removal Procedure
- Remove the axle shaft.
- Mark the position of the boot at the axle shaft side.
- Remove the retaining straps for the boot on the transmission side with side-cutting nippers (1).
- Cut open the boot on the axle shaft and remove.
Important: So that retaining ring (1) is accessible.
- Pre-clean the joint.
- Detach the joint from the axle shaft.
• | Spread the retaining ring in the joint with the pliers. |
• | Use the rubber hammer to drive the joint from shaft splines on shaft in direction of arrow. |
Installation Procedure
- Prepare the joint for fitting to axle shaft.
1.1. | Wash out the cavities in the joint. |
1.2. | Insert the new retaining ring. |
1.3. | Fill cavities in the joint with special grease. |
- Slide on the new boot up to mark.
- Carefully drive the joint onto the axle shaft using the rubber hammer until retaining ring engages.
- Push the boot onto joint up to groove.
- Attach the new retaining straps with
J 22610
(1).
- Install the axle shaft.

Removal Procedure
Note:
• | U18 XE petrol engine combined with AF17 automatic transmission; it is not possible to replace the boot on the transmission side, right axle shaft with mass damper. A new half shaft, inner joint assembly with shaft and without outer joint, must be
used. The constant velocity joint on the wheel side must be removed during this process. |
• | Tripod joints cannot be detached. To replace the boot on the transmission side, it is necessary to remove the constant velocity joint on the wheel side. |
- Remove the axle shaft. Refer to
Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement.
- Mark the position of the boot at the axle shaft side.
- Remove the boot clamps for the boot on the transmission side (1).
- Cut open the boot on axle shaft and remove.
- Remove the boot clamps for the boot on the wheel side (1).
Mark the position of the boot at the axle shaft side.
- Pull the boot (1) on the transmission side of the axle shaft joint off over the axle shaft, arrow.
Installation Procedure
- Prepare the axle shaft joint on the transmission side
• | Fill cavities in the joint with special grease. |
- Attach the new boot on the transmission side.
Slide on the new boot up to mark on transmission side.
- Attach the new boot clamps with
J 22610 .
- Push the boot onto the axle shaft on the wheel side.
- Drive the joint onto the axle shaft with a rubber hammer until the retaining ring engages on the axle shaft.
Note: The boot must sit in the groove in the joint.
- Slide the boot (1) into the joint.
- Install the boot clamps on the wheel side and tighten manually with
MKM-804 (I).
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.
- Tighten the boot clamps with the torque wrench and
MKM-804 (II) and (III) to
25 N·m (18 lb ft).
- Install the axle shaft. Refer to
Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement.
