Wheel Drive Shaft Inner Joint and Boot Replacement CV

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the axle shaft.
  2. Mark the position of the boot at the axle shaft side.
  3. Remove the retaining straps for the boot on the transmission side with side-cutting nippers (1).

  4. Object Number: 1941980  Size: SH
  5. Cut open the boot on the axle shaft and remove.
  6. Important: So that retaining ring (1) is accessible.

  7. Pre-clean the joint.

  8. Object Number: 1936781  Size: LH
  9. Detach the joint from the axle shaft.
  10. • Spread the retaining ring in the joint with the pliers.
    • Use the rubber hammer to drive the joint from shaft splines on shaft in direction of arrow.

Installation Procedure

  1. Prepare the joint for fitting to axle shaft.
  2. 1.1. Wash out the cavities in the joint.
    1.2. Insert the new retaining ring.
    1.3. Fill cavities in the joint with special grease.
  3. Slide on the new boot up to mark.
  4. Carefully drive the joint onto the axle shaft using the rubber hammer until retaining ring engages.
  5. Push the boot onto joint up to groove.
  6. Attach the new retaining straps with J 22610  (1).

  7. Object Number: 1937805  Size: SH
  8. Install the axle shaft.

Special Tools

    • J 22610 Keystone Clamp Pliers
    • MKM-804 Tensioner

Removal Procedure

    Note: 

       • U18 XE petrol engine combined with AF17 automatic transmission; it is not possible to replace the boot on the transmission side, right axle shaft with mass damper. A new half shaft, inner joint assembly with shaft and without outer joint, must be used. The constant velocity joint on the wheel side must be removed during this process.
       • Tripod joints cannot be detached. To replace the boot on the transmission side, it is necessary to remove the constant velocity joint on the wheel side.

  1. Remove the axle shaft. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement.
  2. Mark the position of the boot at the axle shaft side.
  3. Remove the boot clamps for the boot on the transmission side (1).

  4. Object Number: 1941941  Size: SH
  5. Cut open the boot on axle shaft and remove.

  6. Object Number: 1941980  Size: SH
  7. Remove the boot clamps for the boot on the wheel side (1).
  8. Mark the position of the boot at the axle shaft side.


    Object Number: 1941953  Size: SH
  9. Pull the boot (1) on the transmission side of the axle shaft joint off over the axle shaft, arrow.

Installation Procedure

  1. Prepare the axle shaft joint on the transmission side
  2. • Wash out the joint.
    • Fill cavities in the joint with special grease.
  3. Attach the new boot on the transmission side.
  4. Slide on the new boot up to mark on transmission side.

  5. Attach the new boot clamps with J 22610 .
  6. Push the boot onto the axle shaft on the wheel side.
  7. Drive the joint onto the axle shaft with a rubber hammer until the retaining ring engages on the axle shaft.

  8. Object Number: 1937803  Size: SH

    Note: The boot must sit in the groove in the joint.

  9. Slide the boot (1) into the joint.
  10. Install the boot clamps on the wheel side and tighten manually with MKM-804 (I).
  11. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 1938638  Size: LH
  12. Tighten the boot clamps with the torque wrench and MKM-804 (II) and (III) to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).
  13. Install the axle shaft. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement.
