GM Service Manual Online
For 1990-2009 cars only

Normal Vehicle Use

This schedule is for vehicles that:

    • Carry passengers and cargo within recommended limits. These limits are listed on the vehicle's Tire Loading Information Label located on the driver's door.
    • Are driven on reasonable road surfaces within legal driving limits.
    • Use the recommended fuel.

Maintenance Schedule Intervals

The services shown in this schedule up to 250 000 km (150,000 mi) should be performed after 250 000 km (150,000 mi) at the same intervals.

Axle Boots, Suspension Bushings and Ball Joint Seal Inspection

Inspect the axle boots, suspension bushings, and ball joint seal every time the engine oil and filter are changed.

Footnotes

† The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency or the California Air Resources Board has determined that the failure to perform this maintenance item will not nullify the emission warranty or limit recall liability prior to the completion of the vehicle's useful life. Saturn, however, urge that all recommended maintenance services be performed at the indicated intervals and the maintenance be recorded.

+  A good time to check the brakes is during tire rotation. Refer to Brake System Inspection under Explanation of Scheduled Services .

Engine Oil Scheduled Maintenance

Your vehicle has a computer system that lets you know when to change the engine oil and filter. This is based on engine revolutions and engine temperature and not on mileage. Based on driving conditions, the mileage at which an oil change will be indicated can vary considerably. For the oil life system to work properly, you must reset the system every time the oil is changed.

When the system has calculated that oil life has been diminished, it will indicate that an oil change is necessary. A CHG OIL" message displays in the message center.

If the "CHG OIL" message stays on in the message center for about 30 seconds after you start the engine, it means there is less than 10 percent of the oil life left. Change the engine oil soon.

The mileage between oil and filter changes will vary depending on how you driver your vehicle- usually between 5 000 km (3,000 miles) and 10 000 km (6,000 miles) since your last oil and filter change. Never drive your vehicle more than  10 000 km (6,000 miles) or 6 months without changing the oil and filter.

Always keep a written record of the mileage and date when oil is changed.

Each time engine oil is changed, the system must be reset. Refer to GM Oil Life System Resetting .
