SMU - Revised Torque Specification for VT23E (Vti) Transaxle Variable Driven Pulley Bearing Retainer Bolts

The six bolts used to secure the retainer to the variable driven pulley assembly have changed design and require a new torque specification. The new bolts, P/N 11517519, replace the old bolts, P/N 24214611. The old bolts are a grade 4.8 with a 8 mm socket hex head and require a torque of 5N·m (44 in-lbs). The new bolts are a grade 9.8 with a 10 mm heavy hex flange head and require a torque of 9 N·m(80 in-lbs). The bolt grade or class (4.8 verses 9.8) is visibly stamped on the top of each bolt head. Since the new bolts are more durable and can replace the old style bolt, only the new bolts will be available as a service replacement. However, when replacing an old bolt with a new design, all six bolts must be replaced and the new tightening specifications must be followed.

The Case Cover Assembly Procedures in the 2002-2003 VUE and 2003 ION Transaxle Service Manuals contain tightening specifications to support only the old bolt design. Please obtain these Service Manuals and update the Case Cover Assembly Procedures with this new information.
