Subject:M16, M75 VT25E (VTi) Transaxle -- Information on Damage to Input Hub Seal and/or Variable Drive Pulley Follower After Case Cover Replacement, DTCs P0741, P0742, P1882

Models:2003-2004 Saturn ION
2003-2005 Saturn VUE
with VT25E (VTi) Transaxle (RPOs M16, M75)

Saturn retailers may have the following potential concerns with the VTi transaxle after replacing the case cover:

    • DTC P0741 Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) System - Stuck Off or DTC P0742 Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) System - Stuck On set as a result of an input shaft seal ring being cut.
    • DTC P1882 Ratio Control Performance will set as a result of the variable pulley being broken or improperly assembled. Ratio may be low to allow vehicle to move in Drive.

Field returns of remanufactured VT25E case cover assemblies indicate that input shaft seals are being cut and the variable drive pulley follower is being broken during assembly. Please follow the instructions below to ensure these components are not damaged during case cover replacement.

Variable Drive Pulley Follower

Remove the valve body assembly prior to removing the case cover assembly and install after the new case cover assembly has been installed. In addition, when installing the case cover assembly, take care to properly center before lowering the assembly in order to prevent the variable drive pulley follower from contacting the transmission case assembly.

Input Shaft Seals

Before installing the case cover, it is necessary to size the seals in order to prevent them from being oversized during the assembly process. Refer to the procedure below.

Notice: In order to prevent seal damage, size only one seal at a time by starting the first seal in the sizing tool and working the tool over each seal individually.

Important: It may be necessary to manipulate the seal with your fingers in order to decrease the outside diameter before using the Input Shaft Seal Si\zer J 43063-3.

Important: Ensure the Input Shaft Seal Sizer J 43063-3 bottoms out on the input shaft.

  1. Using the Input Shaft Seal Sizer J 43063-3, size the fluid seal rings.
  2. Leave the Input Shaft Seal Sizer J 43063-3 in place for at least 5 five minutes in order to properly size the fluid seal ring.
