The OBDII diagnostics require a thermostatically controlled engine coolant heater cord that disables the coolant heater above a threshold temperature, approximately -18°C (0°F). Using a non-thermostatically controlled engine coolant heater cord above this threshold temperature may generate a DTC P0116.
The figure above shows a non-thermostatically controlled plug (top) and a thermostatically controlled plug (bottom). The thermostatically controlled plug is larger and has a tag attached indicating that it operates below -18°C (0°F).
If any of the above-listed vehicles is found to have DTC P0116 set, the technician should verify that the correct engine coolant heater cord is installed. The thermostatically and non-thermostatically controlled engine coolant heater cords are interchangeable.
