The OBDII diagnostics require a thermostatically controlled engine coolant heater cord that disables the coolant heater above a threshold temperature, approximately -18°C (0°F). Using a non-thermostatically controlled engine coolant heater cord above this threshold temperature may generate a DTC P0116.

Engine Coolant Heater Cord Plug Ends (Cobalts)

Object Number: 1909139 Size: MH

The figure above shows a non-thermostatically controlled plug (top) and a thermostatically controlled plug (bottom). The thermostatically controlled plug is larger and has a tag attached indicating that it operates below -18°C (0°F).

If any of the above-listed vehicles is found to have DTC P0116 set, the technician should verify that the correct engine coolant heater cord is installed. The thermostatically and non-thermostatically controlled engine coolant heater cords are interchangeable.
