Seat Belt Retractor Pretensioner Replacement - Front Coupe

Removal Procedure

    Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in the Preface section.

    Caution: In order to prevent accidental deployment and the risk of personal injury, do not dispose of an undeployed inflatable restraint seat belt pretensioner as normal shop waste. Undeployed seat belt pretensioners contain substances that could cause severe illness or personal injury if their sealed containers are damaged during disposal. Use the following deployment procedures to safely dispose of an undeployed seat belt pretensioner. Failure to observe the following disposal methods may be a violation of federal, state, or local laws.

    Caution: When carrying an undeployed inflatable restraint seat belt pretensioner:

       • Do not carry the seat belt pretensioner by the wires or connector.
       • Carry the seat belt pretensioner by the piston tube, keeping hands and fingers away from the cable.
       • Make sure the open end of the seat belt pretensioner piston tube points away from you and other people.
       • Do not cover the seat belt pretensioner piston tube opening with your hand.
    Failure to observe these guidelines may result in personal injury.

  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling .
  2. Remove the headliner . Refer to Headlining Trim Panel Replacement.
  3. Disconnect the electrical connector from the retractor pretensioner.
  4. Remove the retractor pretensioner bolt.
  5. Remove the pretensioner.
  6. Fully deploy the pretensioner before disposal. Refer to Pretensioner Handling and Scrapping .

Installation Procedure

  1. Position the pretensioner in the vehicle.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the pretensioner bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 45 N·m (33 lb ft).

  5. Connect the electrical connector to the retractor pretensioner.
  6. Install the headliner. Refer to Headlining Trim Panel Replacement .
  7. Enable the SIR system. Refer to .
  8. Inspect the seat belt for proper operation.

  2. Remove the lower trim panel from the center pillar. Refer to Center Pillar Lower Garnish Molding Replacement .

  4. Disconnect the electrical connector from the retractor pretensioner.
  5. Remove the retractor bolt.
  6. Remove the pretensioner by sliding the pretensioner up and out of the pocket in the center pillar.
  7. Fully deploy the pretensioner before disposal. Refer to Pretensioner Handling and Scrapping .

Installation Procedure

  1. Slide the pretensioner retractor into the pocket in the center pillar.
  2. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  3. Install the bolt while holding the pretensioner in place.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 45 N·m (33 lb ft).

  5. Connect the electrical connector to the retractor pretensioner.
  6. Install the lower trim panel to the center pillar. Refer to Center Pillar Lower Garnish Molding Replacement .
  7. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling.
  8. Inspect the seat belt for proper operation.
