RKE Poor Transmitter Range

Subject:Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) Poor Transmitter Range -- Rotate Position of Body Control Module (BCM) 180° in Vehicle

Models:2000-2001 Saturn L-Series vehicles equipped with remote keyless entry (RPO RFA) up to and including VIN 1Y570729



Condition:

Some customers may comment on poor RKE range while trying to lock or unlock the vehicle.

Cause:

This condition may be caused by orientation of the internal antenna within the BCM.

Correction:

Verify the condition and rotate the BCM in the vehicle 180°.

Service Procedure: Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) Range Performance Check.

  1. Move the vehicle outside and as far away as possible from objects that could interfere with RKE function.
  2. While standing directly behind the vehicle on the drivers side at a distance of 15 feet, function test the features on the RKE.
  3. • If the vehicle locks and unlocks, the RKE system is OK. However, the RKE range performance will be increased when the BCM is rotated. Proceed to BCM Rotation Procedure in this bulletin to rotate the BCM.
    • If the vehicle does not lock and unlock, move closer to the vehicle while functioning the RKE transmitter.
       - If the RKE features operate when moved closer to the vehicle, then it will be necessary to rotate the BCM. Proceed to BCM Rotation Procedure in this bulletin to rotate the BCM.
       - If the RKE features do not operate, refer to Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) System Check procedure located in the Locks and Security section of the 2000-2001 L-Series Body Electrical Volume II Service Manual.

BCM Rotation Procedure:

  1. Open the glove compartment door.
  2. Remove the glove compartment lamp assembly by pulling on the lamp plunger.
  3. Disconnect the glove compartment lamp wiring harness from the glove compartment lamp.

  4. Object Number: 896491  Size: SH
  5. Remove the right side I/P lower closeout panel (hush panel) retainers.
  6. Pull the closeout panel rearward to detach from the forward retainers.

  7. Object Number: 897891  Size: SH
  8. Remove the right side heater outlet assembly retainer and remove the outlet.

  9. Object Number: 896834  Size: SH
  10. Remove the glove compartment door.

  11. Object Number: 896832  Size: SH
  12. Remove the glove compartment bin fasteners.

  13. Object Number: 896914  Size: SH
  14. Slowly remove the glove compartment bin, tilting the bin downward to expose the BCM located on top of the glove compartment bin.
  15. Remove the BCM from the glove compartment bin by sliding the module out of the attaching slots.

  16. Object Number: 886180  Size: SH
  17. Re-secure the BCM to the glove compartment bin slots with the BCM connectors oriented to the front of the car.
  18. Install the glove compartment bin partially into the opening.

  19. Object Number: 896875  Size: SH
  20. Route the glove compartment lamp wiring harness through the lamp opening and connect the glove compartment lamp wiring harness to the glove compartment lamp.
  21. Snap the lamp into the glove compartment bin.

  22. Object Number: 886181  Size: SH
  23. Install the glove compartment bin to the I/P with the fasteners.
  24. Tighten
    Tighten the glove compartment bin-to-I/P fasteners to 2.5 N·m (22 lb in).

  25. Install the right side heater outlet with the retainer to the glove compartment bin.

  26. Object Number: 896491  Size: SH
  27. Install the right side lower I/P closeout panel with the retainers.
  28. Operate the glove compartment lamp and glove compartment door to ensure proper operation.

  29. Object Number: 896834  Size: SH
  30. Install the glove compartment door with the fasteners.
  31. Tighten
    Tighten the glove compartment door outer cover fasteners to 2 N·m (18 lb in).

  32. Verify proper function of the RKE system
