Subject: | Tapping Type Noise in Engine Compartment Area (Install New Isolated Fuel Feed and Return Pipe Retaining Clip) |
Models: | 2000 Saturn L-Series vehicles |
Some customers may comment about a tapping type noise that seems to be coming from the engine compartment or instrument panel area(s). The frequency of the tapping noise will increase with engine rpm. The noise is most audible while sitting in the passenger compartment with all the doors and windows closed and the engine at idle. The noise may also be described as sounding similar to a diesel engine.
The opening and closing of fuel injectors causes noise to be transmitted through the metal fuel pipes in the engine compartment into the body of the vehicle at the engine compartment rail on the passenger side of the vehicle.
Verify that the tapping noise is coming from the fuel pipes by pulling the fuel pipes out of retaining clip on engine compartment rail on passenger side of vehicle. If tapping noise goes away when fuel pipes are removed from retaining clip, follow the procedure in this bulletin to install new isolated fuel pipe retaining clip (P/N 24425120).
