Purpose
The purpose of this bulletin is to provide service information regarding 1st and 2nd design oil filter elements and oil filter caps available for the 4-cyl (L61) engine, and how to determine which oil filter cap and combination should be used.
Notice: If an incorrect oil filter element or oil filter and combination is used, severe engine damage may occur.
A change has been made to oil filter element, always attach (snap) the oil filter element onto the oil filter cap assembly before installing the oil filter element assembly into the oil filter housing/block. This will confirm the correct oil filter element and oil filter cap combination is being used.
Notice: If the oil filter element does not attach (snap) into the oil filter cap, DO NOT install into the oil filter housing/block or engine damage may occur. Refer to application chart in this bulletin for correct oil filter cap and oil filter element usage.

2000 - 2001 Vehicles
1st design cap (does not have a large YELLOW dot) can be used with 1st and 2nd design oil filters elements.
2002 Vehicles
2nd design cap (identified with a 10 mm YELLOW dot on top of oil cap) must be used only with 2nd design oil filter elements.

Both 1st and 2nd design oil filter elements have a zig-zag pattern on the paper element (refer to illustration on page 1 of this bulletin).
1st Design Filters
Identified with smaller conical tube. Filter should be used only with 1st design oil filter caps.
2nd Design Filters
Identified by larger conical tube. Filter can be used with 1st and 2nd design oil filter caps.
