Purpose

The purpose of this bulletin is to provide a new "Differential Ring Gear Replacement" procedure and to update all 2000/2001 and 2000/2003 L-Series Manual Transaxle Service Manuals at your location.

Please obtain all 2000/2001 and 2000/2003 L-Series Manual Transaxle Service Manuals and make the updates as indicated below.

  1. Make photocopies of page 2 in this bulletin as needed.
  2. Insert page 2 of this bulletin before the "Differential" procedure in the Manual Transaxle System section.

Service Manual update for "Differential Ring Gear Replacement" procedure in the 2000/2001 and 2002/2003 L-Series Manual Transaxles Service Manuals. Refer to Technical Information Bulletin 02-T-00. June, 2002.

Differential Ring Gear Replacement - Removal

  1. Remove differential ring gear bolts using an external Torx® drive.
  2. Drive ring gear off differential housing using a plastic hammer.

Differential Ring Gear Replacement - Installation

  1. Install ring gear with the marking (machined side) towards the differential housing.
  2. Important: The ring gear may need to be pulled onto the differential housing using the bolts.

  3. Install new bolts and tighten alternately until ring gear is seated against differential housing.
  4. Once ring gear is seated on differential housing, torque all ring gear bolts.
  5. Tighten
    Ring Gear Bolts 20 + 90° N·m (15 + 90° lb ft)

To receive credit for this repair during the warranty coverage period, submit a claim through the Saturn Dealer System for K3130 (Differential Gear Assembly, Side Bearings - R&R or Replace), of if another procedure is performed, refer to the appropriate Electronic Labor Time Guide for the correct Labor Operation Code and Time.
