Pressure Diagnosis
• | With vehicle on a level surface, allow adequate drain down time (2-3 minutes)
and measure for a low oil level. |
• | Add the recommended grade engine oil and fill the crankcase until the
oil level measures full on the oil level indicator. |
• | Run the engine and verify low or no oil pressure on the vehicle gauge
or lamp. |
• | Listen for a noisy valve train or a knocking noise. |
• | Inspect for the following: |
- | Oil diluted by moisture or unburned fuel mixtures |
- | Improper oil viscosity for the expected temperature |
- | Incorrect or malfunctioning oil pressure sender |
- | Incorrect or malfunctioning oil pressure gauge |
- | Malfunctioning oil bypass valve |
• | Remove the oil pressure sender or another engine block oil gallery plug. |
• | Install a oil pressure gauge and measure the engine oil pressure. |
• | If the engine oil pressure is below specifications, inspect the engine
for one or more of the following: |
- | Oil pump-to-engine front cover bolts loose. Refer to
Oil Pump Assemble
procedure in this section of the service manual. |
- | Oil pump screen loose, plugged, or damaged |
- | Malfunctioning oil pump pressure regulator valve |
- | Cracked, porous or restricted oil galleries |
- | Oil gallery plugs missing or incorrectly installed. Refer to
Engine Block Disassemble
procedure in this section of the service manual. |
Pressure Check
Tools Required
Important: A shown in this chart, SAE 5W-30 is best for your vehicle. However, you
can use SAE 10W-30 if it's going to be -7°C (20°F) or above.
These numbers on an oil container show its viscosity, or thickness. Do not use engine
oil with a viscosity rating such as SAE 10W-40, SAE 20W-50, and 30W
as it does not meet Saturn recommended requirements.
Engine Additives:
Don't add anything to your oil. Your Saturn Retailer is ready to advise if something
should be added.
Important: The oil level should be 4.76 mm (3/16 in) above or below the MAX
line on the dipstick, after the engine's oil and filter have been changed. If the
oil level is at or below the MIN line, check for oil leaks and add oil up to the MAX
line.
- Check the engine oil level.
- Using the , remove the oil pressure switch.
- Install the and
the , LL0 shown, L61 similar.
- Start the engine and warm to the normal temperature.
Important: Check for oil leakage after installing the oil pressure switch.
- Check the oil pressure.
Specification
The oil pressure at 1000 RPM is 344.75-531.60 kPa (50-80 psi).
Tighten
Tighten the oil pressure sensor to block to 35 N·m (26 lb ft).
