KM-210 Steering Wheel Puller

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 896493  Size: SH
  1. Put shifter in neutral and block the wheels
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Disable the SIR System. Refer to LINK procedure in this service manual. However, you will not be able to remove the key from the ignition.
  4. Gently pull on the left and right side console extensions to remove the extensions

  6. On power windows, using a small flat blade tool, gently pry upward on the rear portion of the power window switch to partially disengage the switch from the console.
  7. Disconnect power window switch harness from switch and remove the power window switch.

  9. Disengage console park brake boot by squeezing the boot in while pulling upward.
  10. Lift the park brake boot over the park brake assembly.

  12. Remove the front console tray by pulling upward on the tray assembly.
  13. Disconnect the console wiring harness from the main body harness located under the front console tray.

  15. On automatic transmissions, pull up on PRNDL cover to disengage cover.

  17. On 5-speed transmissions, pull up on the shifter boot to disengage the boot.

  19. Move the front seats to the forward most position and remove the console rear fasteners.
  20. Remove the console front fasteners
  21. Gently lift the console up and over the shifter or the PRNDL cover and remove the console assembly.

  23. Remove the I/P-to-floor pan bracket nuts from studs.

  25. Remove the center trim plate by grabbing the trim plate at the A/C vent area and gently pulling it to disengage the attaching clips.
  26. Tilt the trim plate sideways and disconnect the trim plate switch harnesses, then remove the trim plate.

  28. Remove the radio fasteners and partially remove the radio to expose the radio electrical connectors.
  29. Disconnect the radio electrical connectors, antenna, and radio ground strap from radio. then remove the radio.

  31. Remove the HVAC control head fasteners and partially remove the controller. Let the control head hang loose in the I/P opening.

  33. Disconnect the wiring harness clip from the I/P at the center outlet.

  35. Turn the steering wheel to the 3 o'clock position.
  36. Remove the inflator module by inserting a stubby flat blade screwdriver into the triangle shaped hole in the rear steering wheel shroud.
  37. Turn the screwdriver to release the spring fastener , while lifting up on the corner of the bag closest to the fastener.
  38. Repeat for the second fastener.
  39. Turn the steering wheel to 9 o' clock.
  40. Repeat steps until all spring fasteners are released.

  42. Disconnect the inflator module harness and horn lead.
  43. Remove the inflator module.

  45. Disconnect the cruise control if equipped, switch the connection and disconnect the harness from the steering wheel

  47. Remove the steering wheel attachment nut and discard.

  49. Install the Steering Wheel Puller KM-210.
  50. Remove the steering wheel feeding the wiring through the wiring through the wheel opening
  51. Important: Always align the front wheels to the straight-ahead position when installing or removing a coil assembly. If a coil is removed without the wheels in a straight-ahead position and steering wheel has not been moved, the same coil assembly can be reinstalled if coil hub has not been rotated.

    Important: If yellow tab is not available, use tape to prevent SIR coil hub has not been rotated

  52. Insert the yellow tab or use a piece of tape to prevent the SIR from rotating.

  54. Remove the upper and lower steering column cover attachments.

  56. Remove the ignition switch bezel and remove the covers.

  58. Remove the wiper/washer switch and headlamp/turn switch.
  59. Important: Cover the top of the steering column.

  60. Position the steering column to its lowest

  62. Remove the left side I/P lower closeout panel, hush panel, retainers and let closeout panel hush panel hang loose.

  64. Remove the I/P filler, knee bolster by pulling at the attaching clip locations.

  66. Remove the upper and lower I/P cluster trim plate fasteners and remove trim plate
  67. Remove the upper and lower I/P clusters fasteners and pull rearward to remove the cluster.

  69. Disconnect the I/P cluster wiring harness from I/P cluster.

  71. Remove the left side HVAC vent housing and disconnect the electrical connections.

  73. Remove the left side lower air outlet duct.

  75. Open the glove compartment door.
  76. Remove the glove compartment lamp assembly by pulling on the lamp plunger.
  77. Disconnect the glove compartment lamp wiring harness connector from the glove compartment lamp.

  79. Remove the right side I/P lower closeout panel hush panel
  80. Pull the closeout panel hush panel rearward to detach from the forward retainers.

  82. Remove the right side heater outlet assembly retainer and remove the outlet.

  84. Remove the glove compartment door fasteners and door.

  86. Remove the glove compartment bin fasteners.

  88. Slowly remove the glove compartment bin tilting bin downward to expose the BCM residing on top of the glove compartment.
  89. Remove the BCM from the glove compartment by sliding module out of the attaching slots.
  90. Remove the glove compartment bin.
  91. Let the BCM hang on the wiring harness.

  93. Pull upward at the vent locations and remove the windshield defroster grille.

  95. Unsnap the hood release handle from the I/P by using a small screwdriver to disengage retainer clips on both sides.

  97. Remove the data link connector (DLC) by pulling downward at connector location.

  99. Remove the I/P harness clips to I/P at the lower steering column location.

  101. Remove the I/P harness clips to the I/P at the center outlet and glove compartment opening location.

  103. Remove the fastener at the left side I/P to beam the location.
  104. Remove the two fasteners behind the I/P cluster location.
  105. Remove the two fasteners at the upper glove compartment location.
  106. Remove the two fasteners at the end bracket location.
  107. Remove the three fasteners at the windshield defroster location.

  109. Carefully remove the I/P assembly from the vehicle

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 896928  Size: SH
  1. Position the I/P to the vehicle.
  2. Loosely install the upper I/P fasteners at the windshield defroster location.
  3. Loosely install the I/P fasteners at the I/P cluster location.
  4. Loosely install the I/P fasteners at the glove compartment location.
  5. Loosely install the I/P fasteners at the left side to beam location.
  6. Loosely install the I/P fasteners at the end brackets.
  7. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  8. Tighten all fasteners.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the I/P assembly to 20 N·m(26 lb ft).

  10. Secure the I/P harness to the I/P at the locations where the clips were removed.

  12. Attach the electrical harness to I/P at the center outlet location.

  14. Install the cluster harness to the I/P

  16. Install the I/P cluster into the I/P housing ensuring that the cluster harness is connected. Install and tighten the fasteners.
  17. Tighten
    Tighten the I/P assembly to 20 N·m(26 lb ft).

  18. Install the I/P cluster trim plate with the fasteners.
  19. Tighten
    Tighten the I/P cluster trim plate to 2.5 N·m(22 lb in).

  20. Position the I/P filler knee bolster to the instrument panel and push at the attaching clip locations to secure the filler to the I/P.

  21. Object Number: 896836  Size: SH
  22. Connect the left side A/C outlet switch harness and install the A/C outlet with the fastener
  23. Tighten
    Tighten the A/C outlet to 2.5 N·m(22 lb in).

  24. Snap the hood release handle bracket into the I/P.

  26. Install the data link connector (DLC) by snapping into the I/P bracket.

  28. Install the left side HVAC lower outlet with the retainer.

  29. Object Number: 894751  Size: SH
  30. Install the HVAC control head to the I/P and install the fasteners.
  31. Tighten the fasteners.
  32. Tighten
    Tighten the HVAC control head to 2.5 N·m(22 lb in).

  33. Connect the radio strap spade terminal, electrical connectors, and antenna to rear of radio.
  34. Install the radio by sliding it into the guides on the instrument panel.
  35. Install and tighten the fasteners.
  36. Tighten
    Tighten the radio to 2.5 N·m(22 lb in).

  37. Connect the center trim plate switch harnesses to switches and snap the center trim plate into the I/P.

  39. Snap the windshield defroster grille into the I/P.

  41. Install the glove compartment bin partially into the opening
  42. Secure the BCM to the glove compartment bin slots.

  43. Object Number: 887119  Size: SH
  44. Route the glove compartment lamp wiring harness through the lamp opening and connect the wiring harness to glove compartment lamp.
  45. Snap the lamp into the glove compartment bin.

  46. Object Number: 896832  Size: SH
  47. Install the glove compartment bin to the I/P with the fasteners.
  48. Tighten
    Tighten the glove compartment bin to 2.5 N·m (22 lb in).

  49. Install the right side heater outlet with the retainer to glove compartment bin.

  50. Object Number: 896491  Size: SH
  51. Install the right side lower dash closeout panel (hush panel) with the retainers.

  52. Object Number: 896834  Size: SH
  53. Install the glove compartment door with the fasteners.
  54. Tighten
    Tighten the glove compartment door to 2 N·m(18 lb in).

  55. Operate the glove compartment lamp and the glove compartment door to ensure proper function.

  56. Object Number: 896698  Size: SH
  57. Install the I/P-to-floor pan brackets nuts.
  58. Tighten
    Tighten the I/P-to-floor pan bracket nuts to 20 N·m(15 lb ft).

  59. Position the console into the vehicle. Route the shifter/PRNDL boot through the console opening.
  60. Install the console front fasteners.
  61. Tighten
    Tighten the console fasteners to 2.5 N·m(22 lb in).

  62. Move the front seats to the forward most position and install console rear fasteners.
  63. Tighten
    Tighten the console fasteners to 2.5 N·m(22 lb in).

  64. On automatic transmission, snap the PRNDL cover into the console opening.

  65. Object Number: 895322  Size: SH
  66. On 5-speed transmissions, snap the shifter boot into the console opening.

  68. Connect the console wiring harness to the main body harness located under the front console tray.
  69. Snap the console front tray into the console.

  70. Object Number: 896945  Size: SH
  71. On power windows, connect the power window harness to power window switch and snap the switch into place.

  73. Snap the park brake boot into place.

  74. Object Number: 896493  Size: SH
  75. Install the console extensions.

  76. Object Number: 870643  Size: SH
  77. Install the steering column trim cover and attachment fasteners.
  78. Tighten
    Tighten the steering column trim cover to 4 N·m(35 lb in).


    Object Number: 862575  Size: SH
  79. Install the ignition switch bezel.

  80. Object Number: 862539  Size: SH
  81. Remove the yellow tab or tape from the SIR coil assembly.
  82. Route the wiring through the steering wheel and install the steering wheel onto the steering shaft noting the orientation notch that locates the steering wheel in the correct position.
  83. Important: A new steering wheel attachment nut must be used.

  84. Install the new steering wheel attachment nut.
  85. Tighten
    Tighten the steering wheel attaching nut to 40 N·m(30 lb ft).

  86. If equipped, connect the cruise control switch connectors and attach the harness to the wheel

  87. Object Number: 862544  Size: SH
  88. Connect the inflator module wiring harness and install the connector position assurance (CPA) device.
  89. Install the inflator module into the steering wheel. Be sure to seat all four attachment points.
  90. Enable the SIR system. Refer to LINK procedure in this service manual.
