Subject: | Engine Starts and Then Stalls, Engine Cranks But Will Not Start, or Engine Hesitation Under Heavy Acceleration (Replace Fuel Pump Module) |
Models: | 2001 Saturn L-Series vehicles |
Some customers may comment that the engine will start and then stall, that the engine cranks but will not start, or that the engine hesitates on a heavy acceleration. This condition may also be accompanied by DTCs P0171 and/or P0174.
Fuel system pressure may be lost due to a disconnected fuel supply hose within the fuel pump module. This fuel supply hose runs between the jet pump fitting and top of fuel pump.
If the engine starts and then stalls or cranks and will not start, perform the "Engine Cranks But Won't Start" diagnostic chart in the Emission Controls section of the appropriate 2001 L-Series engine service manual.
If the engine has a hesitation under heavy acceleration, perform the "Fuel System Diagnosis - Fuel Supply Chart" in the Fuel System section of the appropriate 2001 L-Series engine service manual.
• | If the above diagnostic chart(s) leads to repair other than fuel pump module replacement, repair as indicated. |
• | If the above diagnostic chart(s) leads to fuel pump module replacement, refer to "Fuel Pump Module" procedure in the Fuel System section of the appropriate 2001 L-Series engine service manual. When replacing fuel pump module, it will be necessary to transfer fuel level sending unit from old fuel pump module to new fuel pump module. |
Important: After removing fuel pump module, the fuel supply hose between the top of fuel pump and jet pump fitting may be disconnected as shown in the illustration. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REPAIR THIS CONDITION. THE FUEL PUMP MODULE MUST BE REPLACED.
