Intermittent Click/Tick Noise From Engine Compartment During Cold Ambient Temp

Subject:Intermittent Click/Tick Noise from Engine Compartment During Cold Ambient Temperatures (Replace New Canister Purge Solenoid)

Models:2000 - 2001 Saturn L-Series vehicles equipped with DOHC 2.2L (L-61) engines


Condition

Some customer may comment about intermittent click/tick noise coming from engine compartment. They may also comment that noise is more noticeable during cold ambient temperatures.

Cause

The opening and closing of EVAP canister purge solenoid creates the noise. The noise is amplified due to EVAP canister purge solenoid being mounted on the air filter housing. This allows customers to hear noise inside passenger compartment.

Correction

Replace and relocate new EVAP canister purge solenoid. Refer to procedure in this bulletin to replace and relocate new EVAP canister purge solenoid.

Procedure
Object Number: 893375 Size: MF

Caution: DO NOT ALLOW SMOKING OR THE USE OF OPEN FLAMES IN THE AREA WHERE WORK ON THE FUEL OR EVAP SYSTEM IS TAKING PLACE. ANYTIME WORK IS BEING DONE ON THE FUEL SYSTEM, DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE.

  1. Ignition Off.
  2. Disconnect purge line quick connect from EVAP purge solenoid.
  3. Disconnect EVAP purge solenoid electrical connector.
  4. Remove EVAP purge solenoid vacuum line from throttle body and retaining clips.
  5. Lift EVAP purge solenoid from bracket on air cleaner housing to remove solenoid and vacuum line together.

  6. Disconnect EVAP purge line on front-of-dash from retaining clips.
  7. Disconnect EVAP purge line quick connect from underbody purge line and remove line.
  8. Remove green quick connector retainer from male end of underbody purge line discard.

    9. Object Number: 885994 Size: SH
  9. Remove fuel line bracket and discard.

    10. Object Number: 885995 Size: SH
  10. Install new EVAP purge solenoid and bracket assembly in place of old fuel line bracket.

    11. Tighten
    EVAP Purge Solenoid Bracket Bolt: 8 N·m (71 in lbs)

  11. Install new EVAP purge line between solenoid assembly and underbody purge line.

    12. Object Number: 885996 Size: SH
  12. Install new EVAP purge line between new solenoid and throttle body port. Insert line into all retaining clips.

    13. Object Number: 885998 Size: MF

    Notice: Do not attempt to keep wire harness retainer connected to stud on RH strut tower. W hen harness is rerouted to the solenoid location, the harness will not be long enough to be attached at strut tower and still allow for engine movement.

  13. Remove EVAP purge solenoid wire harness retainer from stud on RH strut tower.
  14. Install electrical connector to new EVAP purge solenoid.
  15. Install plastic tie strap around main engine harness as shown to prevent harness from rubbing on any nearby components.
