Condition
Customers comment of loose or torn seat covers.
Cause
When servicing the front and/or rear seat cover/pad with the drawstring design,
refer to the appropriate procedure in this bulletin.
Procedure
Front Seat Cushion Cover/Pad Drawstring Replacement
- Remove seat from vehicle. Refer to "Front
Seat Removal" procedure in the "Front Seat Removal" section of the
L-Series, Body Removal & Installation Service Manual, Vol. IV.
- Remove inner recliner cover fasteners.
- Remove outer valance panel. Refer to "Outer
Valance Panel Removal" procedure in the "Outer Valance Panel Removal"
section of the L-Series, Body & Installation Service Manual, Vol. IV.
- On power seat option and heated seats, disconnect
power recliner and seat back heat pad harness.
- Remove recliner fasteners and remove and seat back assembly.
- If pad is to be replaced on heated seats, disconnect
heated seat wiring connector from seat frame harness.
- Remove seat cushion carrier fasteners and remove
seat carrier from seat adjuster.
- Stretch one seat cover drawstring over the corresponding
seat frame retaining stud to free the drawstring from the stud. Repeat for opposite
side of seat cover.
- Remove remains of old drawstring and discard.
Installation
- Cover the sharp-edged lip around the perimeter
of the pan to within 3" (7.62cm) of the front edge of the seat pan with 44"
(111.76cm) of Precision-Trim edge molding (P/n #60 super black), (Prostripe ®
edge molding P/NM79-050-02 black) or equivalent.
- Replace drawstring with P/N 22710493, Lace-F&R/Seat
Cush Cvr Seam. Cut to a length of 80" (203.20cm). Attach a fishwire to one end
of the new drawstring and feed through the cover channel.
- Cover the rear edge of the seat where the drawstring
retaining studs are located with duct tape and poke the retaining studs through the
tape.
- Stretch one seat cover drawstring across the
opposite side and attach to seat frame retaining stud through a loop on the drawstring.
Repeat for opposite side of seat cover.
• | Put enough tension on the drawstring to ensure
the bottom lip of the seat cover folds tightly over the metal seat carrier. |
• | Tuck away extra length of drawstring under seat cover. |
- Cover the drawstring with duct tape to hold
it in place.
- Position seat cushion carrier to seat adjuster
and secure with fasteners.
Tighten
Seat Cushion Carrier-to-Seat Adjuster Fasteners: 20 N·m(15 lb ft)
- On power seats and heated seats, route and connect
power seat recliner and heat pad harness to seat pad wiring harness.
- Install seat back assembly to seat adjuster.
Tighten
Recliner Fasteners: 35 N·m(26 lb ft)
- Install inner recliner cover.
Tighten
Inner Recliner Cover Fasteners: 2.5 N·m(22 in lbs)
- Install outer valance panel. Refer to "Outer
Valance Panel Installation" procedure in the "Outer Valance Panel Installation"
section of the L-Series, Body & Installation Service Manual, Vol. IV.
- Install into vehicle. Refer to "Front Seat
Installation" procedure in the "Front Seat Installation" section
of the L-Series, Body & Installation Service Manual, Vol. IV.
Rear Seat Cover Drawstring Replacement
- Pull on rear seat cushion retainer strap while
pulling up on cushion to disengage rear seat cushion forward attachment.
- Push rear seat cushion rearward to disengage rear attachment, then lift
cushion out of vehicle while carefully routing seat belts through seat cushion opening.
- Remove remains of old drawstring and discard.
Installation
- Replace drawstring with p/n 22710493 Lace-F&R/Seat Cush Cvr Seam.
Attach a fishwire to one end of the new drawstring and feed through cover channel.
- Cover any sharp edges on the metal seat cushion
frame that contacts the seat cover and/or drawstring and cloth tape.
- Pull drawstring tight, wrap around retaining loops, and secure drawstring
opening to seat cushion frame.
- Position rear seat cushion over rear seat floor area.
- Route rear seat belts through cushion openings.
- Slide rear seat cushion frame into rear attaching brackets.
- Push downward at rear seat cushion forward retainers to lock cushion to
floor brackets.
- Check seat belts for proper routing through cushion.
- Push downward on front of seat to secure seat cushion to floor pan.

a claim through the Saturn Dealer System for C6870 (Cover and/or Pad, Front Seat Cushion,
Bucket Seat, Driver - R&R or Replace), or C6871 (Cover and/or Pad Front Seat Cushion,
Bucket Seat, Driver - R&R or Replace), or C7258 (Cover and/or Pad, ear Seat
Cushion - R&R Replace). An "add time" cushion is provided to
replace the drawstring.
